Hurricane season is right around the corner, it was deeply troubling to learn facility officials refused to share their evacuation plan with Congress or any emergency government officials anywhere in FL. Do they have a plan to keep these children safe in the event of a hurricane?

Even worse, the Trump Administration is allowing private companies to profit off housing separating children in pathetic conditions—they charge $750 per child per day--nearly twice as much as it costs to stay at the Trump hotel in DC for a night.

I spoke with four girls who had been held there for 45-75 days—well over the supposed 20 day maximum. One girl had been in the facility for 60 days before anyone contacted her brother who lives in the US to reunite them.

On Monday, I traveled to Florida to tour the Homestead Influx Shelter, which is tasked with caring for unaccompanied immigrant children in U.S. custody. Recent media reports have raised serious concerns about the quality of care given to children in their custody.
