however, i will admit that trusting one critic, or author, or artist to be your moral compass in any storm is an irresponsible thing to do for your politics because ultimately they will fail you somehow :) it's good to be able to form your own opinions :)

seems like every couple of months someone tries to write an essay which basically asks: do we have to uplift art in the name of representation if it's also shitty art, and i say, no! you, personally, do not!

and failure!! these are all novels about the failure to succeed, the failure to care about not succeeding, and the failure to hew to the life that was chosen for you because—it seems obvious now—the world as we've known it has become untenable.

in the daylight i’ve reached a more sobering conclusion, which is that ppl who wish to prey on younger vulnerable ppl seek out these alternative spaces precisely out of that trust in community, and perhaps because they feel rejected—as predators—in mainstream spaces. it’s all bad

thinking abt abuse in indie spaces and like... didnt we seek out alt spaces bc we didn’t fit in? bc we craved ways to relate to people outside of the usual hierarchies? didn’t we want to make some new shit? to see that trust in the possibility of community abused is heartbreaking

the particularly indie, particularly toxic combination of preying on young people who sought a sense of belonging/desirability/awareness of a wider world + the softboi infantilization of the alt lit scene + cultural capital used as coercion makes me so goddamn upset
