Wow, thank you for sharing all of this, Hailey! The sonnet metaphor is so rich.

A metaphor for this that has always meant a lot to me came from a Trappist monk from the Abbey of the Genesee in Rochester, NY. He told me that monastic life was like living within a sonnet - a rigid structure, within which infinite variations of beauty are possible.

I love Jesus’ metaphor of wine skins at this point because it’s hard to know when the wine skin will burst and a new one is called for or if you can repair the existing one. What is often schism and heartbreak for one is a work of spirit for another. Can both be right (or wrong)?

I want to have an on-going conversation about the dynamic tension between spirit and structure in community and formation. Every time I talk with someone new about I learn something new. You have a hot take, lemme know. Context: here’s what inspires it for me -

Today on the plane, a man sitting next to me was eating an unpeeled clementine like it was an apple... and I can’t really stop thinking about it... 🤨

Oof yeah. I feel like when it comes to capitalism, it's a particularly good topic to trust your gut on.. your body knows what's good/bad for it. But yaaaa I have opinions, putting it on our ~to be discussed~ list.

Grateful for Sr. Joan Chittister’s reflections at the beginning of Lent - on holy anger and finding renewal of spirit:

Read this fantastic piece by Adam Horowitz, who is living in our Burlingame Mercy Center pilot residency - “What’s a Nice Jewish Boy Doing in a Convent?”

Capturing this moment of loveliness. Sunrise this morning, after 30 minutes of silence out in the chapel in the woods, and reading Merton’s New Seeds of Contemplation, anticipating the trip to Gethsemani later today.

Yesterday I had a conversation with Maureen Smith, a Loretto community member, who marched in Selma. She said when she gets bored of the hymns in church, she just sings protest songs in her head. So grateful to have had the chance to record her stories to be saved for the future.

Shoutout to Sr. Kathleen for showing me the room, revealing her hidden drawers, and telling me the story of their founding & foundresses with the visual aids of coins and jolly ranchers.

One of my favorite rooms in the Loretto motherhouse is the Thomas Merton Center for Creative Exchange. A library of books by Merton and about Merton, founded by Merton’s friend and Loretto leader Mary Luke Tobin, the room celebrates Loretto & Gethsemani’s shared roots.

There’s not much that’s more exciting to me these days than finding a new theologian-crush! Last night I started reading Leonardo Boff - Brazilian liberation theologian. Here are some of my favorite excerpts from “The Path to Hope: Fragments from a Theologian’s Journey.”
