Alas not. My great friend Brian Barron, now very sadly dead, once interviewed him beside a swimming-pool. Amin hauled himself out & one of his large testicles dangled out of his swimming costume. Brian spent the entire interview dreading the consequences of glancing at it.

Blue plaque unveiled today outside flat in east London where King 'Freddie' Mutesa II of Buganda died in 1969. I interviewed him a few hours before his death, supposedly from alcoholic poisoning. He was charming, articulate & entirely sober. I've always suspected he was murdered.

Ireland’s cricketers may have been thrashed by England, but during this Test they’ve shown real quality (especially the bowlers) & will go on to give plenty more of the world’s top teams a fright.

Tv is too busy “celebrating” record temperatures in the UK - hotter than Rio, LA or Mexico City - without asking why or whether it’s really something to celebrate 🙄

A deep Dublin voice behind me today at Lords discussing this very point culminating with ..”and furthermore I have never, ever seen a ******* Turkish plane at any Irish airport, ever.” An argument which was accepted as both pungent and conclusive.

BBC Sport online figures from y’day: Cricket live page - 39.7m page views Tennis live page - 13.4m page views GP live page - 2.5m page views Means that the World Cup Final attracted more views than any other live page - across both News and Sport - this year.

Only one trivial niggle about Ireland’s test cricket team: shouldn’t they be sponsored by Aer Lingus rather than Turkish Airlines - excellent though they are?

No, fair point. It is pretty futile. How many people have changed their minds about Brexit because of their handiwork? They're just looking for attention I think. Why persist with interviews there?

Today we remember Rosalind Franklin, born in 1920. She made a significant contribution to the discovery of the DNA double helix, but was overlooked for a Nobel prize. Still her legacy lives on: in 2020 a robotic rover with her name sets off for Mars

Seamus was wonderful company, from the time I first knew him when he was a passionate young poet in 1972. When we got an honour together in Cambridge in 2000 we kept looking sideways at each other as if to say ‘what are two lads like us doing here?’

Really proud of Ireland’s cricketers in their Test v England - especially the bowlers in this heat. Only a few years ago a teacher at my son’s school in Dublin said they didn’t play cricket because it was ‘too English’. Tell that to India, Pakistan or NZ.

And the best use for that magnificent instrument is to try to stop people finding out what's happening to their country?

Enjoying the Downing St circus greatly. When I was BBC political ed in 1981 Mrs Thatcher’s chief flack Bernard Ingram tried to stop me doing a piece to camera in Downing St: ‘You’re not going to use No. 10 as the background for your amateur theatricals.’ Times have changed.

Great admiration for all the people who are trying to do a good job of broadcasting live about the future of our country while onlookers shout, sing, play the xylophone & generally try to put them off.

Shame on Harari. One small cowardly act, yet it puts into doubt his whole enterprise, and risks making meaningless all those years of hard work.

Boris Johnson is dumping an awful lot of potentially resentful ministers onto the back benches. Pretty brave for a PM with a majority of 2. Could an election be coming - while Jeremy Corbyn is still Labour leader?
