"The most frustrating investigations are where you feel tantalizingly close to a conclusion but you can't get all of the way there." The brilliant filmmaker talks to me at for The Design of Business | The Business of Design. Listen:

The decision of the Fourth Circuit is a reiteration of the 1979 murder trial and of "Fatal Vision." My reaction is in my book, "A Wilderness of Error." No, I don't know whether MacDonald is guilty or innocent, but I do know that he did not receive a fair trial.

When we read the newspaper, are we supposed to do anything?

Reading and rereading Le Carré's "The Pigeon Tunnel," an odd combination of fact, fiction, biography, and philosophy.

MISUNDERSTANDING. Post-modernism didn't create falsehood. Falsehood has been around as long as language has been around. It just made truth less of a pressing concern.

UChicago Press did a beautiful job on the Kindle version of "The Ashtray." Thank you,

"Never say that documentary is only about style — whether it’s verité or something different. It’s about the search for the truth — thinking about what is true and what is false." -

Cynicism doesn't bother me. It's the absence of cynicism that I find troublesome. (What really scares me is mindless, unreflective malice.)

NEXT. My newest project involves three periods of time. The present, the crimes I investigated as a young man in the 1970s, and the crimes themselves committed in the 50s and 60s.

The trick is to make documentaries in a different way, not in the same way as everyone else. (I can't always be successful, but I can try. Movies were a way in. Can some of our most heroic movies, also show our cluelessness...?)

I saw the Thin Blue Line when I was about 8 years old. It has always stuck with me as an example of how the truth can escape all reason, how justice is rarely served. At a young age this film had me thinking and seeing differently. Thank you

I love that moment. Just re-watched Vernon, Florida the other day. The emotional zenith for me was when the turkey hunter nearly broke down in tears while discussing his passion. The man was a true believer in the art of turkey hunting.

I'm about to shoot my campaign on "Global Meltdown." "Global Meltdown" is a much better and more descriptive phrase than "Climate Change" or "Global Warming.")

Truth is like water. Albert Bitterling in my movie "Vernon, Florida" tells the story of two sailors. They're looking out at the ocean. One says, "There's a lot of water out there." And the other says, "Yeah, and that's just the top of it."

How did truth itself become politicized? (Or when did people stop caring about what the truth might be?)
