This position made it a front runner as the potential headquarters of the new United Nations. It was briefly considered to build a brand new city to serve this purpose, but the immediacy of the UN’s work led the organization to its first meeting at NYC’s World’s Fair grounds.

When the war ended, NYC was one of the few great cities still intact: London, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, and many others were heavily scarred by battle. NYC found itself as the largest, wealthiest, and most influential city in the world.

Black Americans saw a similar rise in employment. These positions, however, were not meant to last: federal legislation was passed to force women and people of color to give up their jobs to be taken over by returning soldiers.

During WWI, 100 women worked military positions, often filling traditional roles such as stitching textiles. In 1942, the Navy began started with a call for 600 women. Eventually, 18 million women were able to find jobs in fields that were previously closed to them.
