It's funny how he fixates on talented professional women like you both and , the man is a walking inferiority complex with the poor impulse control of a pathological narcissist. He deserves more pity than hate tbh

My final thought on this is that regardless of who's right here, I think there's lots more work to do in order to get a holistic picture of who these people are and why they do the things they do. Okay much respect and admiration for you both, have a great day :)

From my perspective, I think it's a great loss for counterterrorism analysis that psychological factors are often overlooked for jihadists because it is a crucial element to study in regard to both kinds of terrorism & I think we're missing out on the whole picture with jihadism.

Guys I love both of your work so I don't want to fan these flames or offend anyone but...here's a study on exactly this issue, with many citations. Rukmini, another problem is that this doesn't just apply to the media, it stretches to political rhetoric

I think a lot of us who have covered terrorism for a while, particularly the rise of white supremacism in the United States, are starting to feel like prophets, but not in a good way--more like that Cassandra chick no one listened to until Troy burned

My husband calls himself "Mr. Sulome Anderson" with a combination of humor and pride. Any man who uses that as an insult clearly has little regard for his own wife as someone whose existence is equal in substance to his own.

Sorry, but no. First, there have been many lone wolf terror attacks inspired by jihadist groups but not directed by them. Second, white supremacists are operating in an increasingly interconnected ecosystem with essentially the same ideology

It can be argued that one factor leading to the rise of white supremacist terrorism is a lack of sustained concern about it in the media. An attack happens, it's all over Twitter for 2 or 3 days and then everyone moves on. No continued push for policy change, unlike with jihadism

Right, that's what I meant. Should have been clearer but it's a good starting point for that research and I look forward to seeing your continued work on the subject :)

Just realized you co-authored this great study I just cited to Robin, it's a very useful indication of the disparity in coverage

In many ways, the psychological profile of homegrown jihadists is extremely similar to those of white supremacist terrorists who display the same pathologies, so it's a conversation that should be had on both sides, yet it's often only adequately explored with the latter.

The profile for a jihadist in Syria or Iraq would be different from someone who was born in the U.S. but has pathological, psychological insecurities, felt inadequate and foreign his whole life and seeks an identity by fixating on places and conflicts he has never experienced.

Perhaps you follow people who are more knowledgable about these things than your average news consumer but I also think the psychological profile for jihadist terrorists in the Middle East is likely different than that of homegrown jihadists who have no connection with the region

Thank you. Not arguing with your point about European media coverage, honestly that's not my specialty so you would know more than me, but this is a good study re: U.S. media: jihadist terror attacks receive 367% more coverage than other mass killings

Again, this is in the U.S. It's disappointing from a counterterrorism perspective because mental health is such a key factor to study in order to understand this phenomenon and while it is rightly explored with white supremacists, such analysis is sadly lacking with jihadists.
