She and her grandmother wanted to get to New York to be reunited with her father. To this day, she hasn’t heard from her grandmother and has no idea where she is.
The trauma and fear in her eyes was visible.

Setting aside legal challenges.
I am astounded so many high level officials—including many career types—have green-lit a set of previously unthinkably radical policies making asylum a 100% impossibility for the poor (only those w/ means to qualify for a visa could ever apply).

I saw one report saying that the asylum office in Guatemala has just 12 employees. Over the past few years, Guatemala has averaged 90 asylum applications per year.
