'Despite decades of an international human rights industry bearing down on Bashir, in the end it was the Sudanese people who ousted him, armed with nothing but 30 years of anger.'

The ‘spider’ at the heart of Sudan’s web — my take on Omar al-Bashir, the leader of Sudan who endured for 30 years despite wars, famines and genocide charges. Today he fell, following months of street protest.

And considering that Ibn Ouf, the official who made the statement and who is to head up a ‘High Council of Armed Forces’ in the interim period is Bashir’s VP and Defence Minister, it’s very much meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I have a meeting that can’t be moved in an hour so that’s most likely when the announcement will happen if you want ballpark 👍🏾

Radio said it was close and then nothing happened. Not frustrating at all.

Would it have been too much to ask for the army to figure out what their plan is first before subjecting us to the wait and torture of military bugles.

The difficulty is that there are precious few (none?) of Bashir's govt and security network who are not also complicit in oppression and human rights abuses. There is no 'clean skin'. So whoever they put in charge will not appease the Sudanese people who want total regime change.

Lots of speculation about mass arrests in Khartoum and leaks about who is heading up a transitional government but important to stress they are not confirmed and the army is yet to release a statement.

I can hear cars honking in celebration on the streets. But Bashir ousted and the others remain is not what we want nor what we demand. REMEMBER THIS - the whole regime has to go

Patriotic songs are being played on Sudanese state TV and the message says ‘An important statement from the military to follow’

No confirmation of Bashir leaving as yet but the army taking over the airwaves stating an announcement to follow soon is a strong sign of a military coup

Of course ideally it should be on the ground but that’s because the government won’t issue permits to us Sudanese or visas to foreign journos. I’m not saying it’s good, just that there isn’t a blackout
