Originally it was tested on the A-12 Oxcart airframe and then modified in the later 1960s to launch off the B-52H bomber. It flew four unsuccessful operational missions over Southern China before the program was terminated in July 1971.

The NRO, as part of its continuing document declassification and release program, has released 97 records associated with the D-21 Tagboard project. The project, a supersonic reconnaissance drone, was conceived by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in 1962.

The D-21 program, codenamed Tagboard, began in the early 1960s under the oversight of the newly established NRO. While the program was canceled before becoming fully operational, its legacy impacted the technology used in national reconnaissance for years to come.

A single, fully-loaded Hexagon carried approx. 300,000 feet of film, with a resolution of 2-3 feet. As a "search" system, Hexagon's frames of imagery covered areas as wide as 370 nautical miles (that's roughly the distance from Washington, D.C. to Cincinnati, OH).

: March 16th is a unique day in NRO history as the anniversary of two Hexagon launches aboard a Titan IIID from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Hexagon-14 launched March 16, 1978, and Hexagon-15's launch (pictured) was on this same day in 1979.
