8:00 AM: Here's a morning satellite view of lake effect from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. It's hard to tell, but the western 2/3 of Lake Erie is mostly ice covered, and mostly ice free from Long Point. Check out that monster plume east of Lake Ontario!

Temperatures will be 15 to 30 degrees below average over the Upper Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, into parts of the northern Mid-Atlantic. Snow expected downwind from the Great Lakes and in the Sierras and Northern Cascades.

Montague Radar Update 8:45 PM: An intense band is right over Watertown and Fort Drum. This band is producing snow fall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Expect blizzard conditions overnight!

Map of coldest observed wind chill values thus far. Readings as low as -60 to -65 over MN! As the chart shows, observed wind chill values were the coldest seen since the 1990s or 1980s over much of the area.
