The goal upon Apollo 11's splashdown was to return the astronauts, spacecraft, & lunar samples to Houston rapidly while maintaining strict biological isolation protocols. The Moon rocks arrived in Houston July 25, & scientists opened the box the next day.

End of a history-making mission! Today in 1969, started 47,000 miles from home, rapidly accelerating toward Earth. It re-entered the atmosphere & at 10,000 feet, the three main parachutes deployed. The crew had been to the Moon & safely returned:

50 years ago, astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, accomplishing President Kennedy’s goal to land man on the Moon & return him safely to Earth. Mission Control celebrated as “Task Accomplished – July 1969” flashed on screen.

We're saddened by the passing of Chris Kraft, our first flight director. He was a space legend who created the concept of Mission Control during the early human spaceflight program and made it an integral part of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. He was 95.
