Best piece of journalism I have read this year. So sad what American has lost. "The 20th century began in Sarajevo," argues George Packer. "Now the American century is over, and even Bosnia, which would not exist without the U.S., is slipping away."

Not sure there will be a practical consequence of imaging black holes. But it's nonetheless an immense achievement. Just as the first telescopic images of moons going @ planets or the first microscopic images of cells changed humanity’s self-conception, these images will too. 5/6

The image further confirmed what might be the greatest imaginative leap that any human has ever had -- Einstein’s theory of relativity and the associated ideas that gravity curves space, light does not travel straight and that acceleration can slow the pace of time. 4/6

This is a concentration of matter and energy so great that nothing could ever escape it. The effort required pooling together more data than had been produced in the history of humanity until not so many decades ago. 3/6

The IMF has shown leadership and courage in highlighting this issue and calling for major changes. It should be relied on going forward to drive the search for a new approach. The stakes go way beyond tax revenue to the political viability of a liberal, open global system.
