The Saarland makes up c.1% of German population but the foreign, economy and (from today) defence ministers all come from there. Also Germany's top army general and the EU's new trade supremo. What might explain the Saarländers' success? Some theories:

Alberto, I agree of course but what has this to do with the point of the tweet you are quoting?

An exciting day here in Strasbourg but the real challenge - navigating the delicate arithmetic of a fractious EU - existed yesterday and will confront von der Leyen tomorrrow and over the course of her term. Her real test has not even begun.

Don't read too much into the numbers of today's parliamentary vote. My first take on Ursula von der Leyen's election to the European Commission presidency:

Germany's Ursula has top notch European credentials. Now she has been elected as President of the European Commission with 383 votes. But who is she?

So it's true: Merkel really has given up on her.

Von der Leyen could have won 420 votes, 430 even - and naturally that would have been better for her authority - but still would have had to negotiate tricky trade-offs within that very broad and fragmented coalition (ditto in the EuCo) on a whole range of legislation.

There's a risk of over-egging the drama of UvdL's narrow win. Yes she owes it to populists. But also to myriad other factors. And this parliament was *always* going to be a fractious place requiring case-by-case majorities and shifting coalitions (ditto the current EuCo).

And there we have it: it seems Ursula von der Leyen may owe her win to a last-minute phone call to Warsaw by Angela Merkel

(51% of MEPs, 52% of those who voted - compared with 56% for Juncker in 2014)

Ursula von der Leyen wins 383 of 733 votes (327 against) and is thus elected European Commission president. A narrow win: 51% and probably reliant on vote of populists like Poland's PiS.

Breaking: Following a decision in our Group meeting, we will support . However, we will be vigilant to ensure that she delivers on the progressive commitments she has made as a result of our pressure.

I admire von der Leyen's Europeanism but this constant touting of her father's Commission career and her Brussels youth feels unnecessary and rather too much like dynastic politics. Her record and proposals are what matter, not her family background.

Not just any MEP: of Germany's satirical DIE PARTEI, making a sartorial comment about von der Leyen's contentious allocation of major contracts to consultancies as German defence minister.

The "conference" could happen anyway. The Q is what results it would bring - if Treaty change then you need 28 Member States to back it. Rebooted Spitz - could probably do politically. But needs national parties to agree. EP init - needs treaty change, so MS to agree.
