On the flip side, governments like Mexico, Uruguay and Iceland stood their ground saying that this would represent a retrogress of at least 25 years. It is equally encouraging to see the solidarity and articulation of CSOs who are stronger as a result of this outdated nonsense.

Maximising resources, tax justice for gender equality #iaffe2019, important to make wealthy and corporates, financial sector to pay taxes, and use women’s rights activism to challenge regressive taxes and budgets, including a binding treaty on TNCs @CA_global @GA4TJ @FemnetProg pic.twitter.com/n39HhIdjMG

Lastly, I arguee that the Guidance pushes two key concepts: the concept of leverage - requiring corporates to use their leverage to prevent and mitigate harm; and the concept of extraterritoriality of IHL. That is, recogning the transboundary character of these activities. #HRC41

Cynthia Trigo, Total S.A., affirmed that we must tackle the structural causes of gender inequality such as patriarchal stereotypes. However, challenging those structures is not always easy. Business can be perceived as intrudors and therefore it can harm their business interests.

Adrienne Cruz, @ilo, said that 'gender neutral' terms often reaffirm socially constructed roles as they are inserted into patriarchal systems that are male-oriented. In this sense, women need to be characterised as high potential group and not as vulnerable group.

Joanna Bourke-Martignoni, @Geneva_Academy, affirmed that we must understand that the Guidance is part of a wider set of norms and laws such as Int. Human Rights Law that must be respected and applied. This includes the recognition of gender as non-binanry.

@SuryaDeva: The guidance creates a framework that demands for: (i) gender responsive assessment; (ii) gender transformative measures – substantive gender equality; and (iii) gender transformative remedies able to change power structures keeping them in marginalised conditions.

Finishing up the live tweet with @WGBizHRs event. The UN Gender Guidance is key because: 1. Women & girls continue to face discrimination due to social stereotypes; 2. States need to understand dif. impacts in order to capture, identify, prevent and mitigate human rts violations.

Holy See: UNGPs demands all respect all applicable laws i.e. all International Human Rights Law. Arguably social norms are indispensable and seenas compatible with human rights law. International legal instrument should be created to ensure remedies at int. and domestic level.
