1/ Here's the opening of Caroline Lucas's address. 'Many ppl took the question that they were being asked, to mean, should the country go on being run in the way that it is, & they voted 'No' with a collective howl of rage & that response was justified then & is justified now.'

you're not alone in that - if see full piece shows that 1 in 5 people in Britain think that 1% should have 1%, the highest % saying that from all countries in study... more in the book on Perils of Perception...

thanks for sharing Helen, and for q Matt. I interpret this as still a call to reduce inequality: ie people guess 1% own 2x what they actually do, but say they should own closer to the reality - therefore conc shd be 1% shd own around half of what they do - paras here...

So I think there are some who get it wrong for reason you suggest, but bigger effects will be hedging and emotional innumeracy. All this, and more, in the Perils of Perception book, an absolute bargain in Jan sales... 4/4

…but this doesn’t explain all of our error, because these are not neutral judgements: people who are more worried about immigration go higher – the emotional innumeracy bit: we overestimate what we're worried about as much as the other way round

…suggests these are not thoughtful calculations/additions of distinct populations. Think bigger effect is ‘hedging’ to middle (50%) that psychophysics suggests we do when we're uncertain: do same with light/heat/weight

It will be for some - but think minor compared to other explanations, for number of reasons: - q specifies foreign born, most people aware there are people of colour born here - q for shows people think 30% are Black/Asian alone when it is/was 11%... (1 of X...)
