In 1989, a visiting scholar to the US named Liu Xiaobo returned to support student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. He died in 2017, imprisoned for his activism. Today, people around the world commemorate the Nobel Peace Prize laureate with an empty chair.

Many Tiananmen Square activists were victims of the “re-education through labour” system. It was abolished in 2013 after half a century. But have things really changed? Today, up to 1 million ethnic minority people are held in Xinjiang’s so-called “re-education camps”.
