Ruling party says 10,000 homes to be built near Istanbul’s new airport to ease workers’ commute, located in area that had been spared development. Activists have long said airport & other transport projects are in reality a real estate project

It’d be funny if this were a joke, but it’s not: Erdogan says they’ll plant a garden on the 3rd airport grounds so Istanbul can breathe. The airport was built by cutting down a real, natural forest. is all about resisting that.

Yes. Or when the traffic is slightly denser than that, but still crazily fast, approaching a junction with everyone suddenly realising they should be in a different lane.

Aha! What she said sounds more like what happens in practice though.

That’s high praise, given that I’m sure you already thought I was pretty bold.

Many helpful replies. As a matter of fact, I love driving in Istanbul. It feels very liberating after stuffy, anal English road culture. I know some may disagree, but from experience I find Turkish drivers far more tolerant and good-natured than their British counterparts.

Many drivers I’ve encountered on the road vehemently disagree.

I’ve been driving in Istanbul for several years now, and am embarrassed to say I still don’t know who has right of way on roundabouts. I always assume it’s whoever’s more assertive, but what’s the actual rule?

As of today Turkish per capita GDP dipped below $8,000 as lira suffers 30% devaluation since mid-Feb. This beats even the global crisis when per capita GDP declined from ~$10,500 in 2008 to ~$8,500 in 2009. Turkey has been thrown further into the depths of middle income trap.

Excellent rundown on how Turkey has found its way into a looming currency crisis. (SPOILER: it’s not an international attack bent on destroying Erdogan).

On top of the currency slide, also subsidizing the rising energy costs by keeping the prices at the pump unchanged and lowering the tax instead. Electioneering hitting new peaks.
