In reality, the curve should be 3d in nature, which is not possible to imagine for us naturally, but we can certainly measure its effects (bending of background star light by foreground object).

Scientific understanding is related to technological development and I think both of them have matured enough to the point that in principle, we are surely capable enough to detect extraterrestrial civilizations, especially if they are similarly advanced enough as we are.
