Old Rolls

It nearly the end of 2013.  It’s been a busy and eventful year and is ending with me living in a flat I own, with my lovely lady and a brand new cat!

I could do a whole ‘looking back at my year’ blog post, but instead I thought I would have a look back through some of the 35mm film scans from the year and pick my favourites that haven’t yet seen the light of the internet.  As far as I now these are all shot on a Nikon FE and Ilford HP5 400.

Some photography resolutions for the new year:

– Learn to use (and love) Lightroom, because apparently everyone else does.

– More film photography. (This is helped by the lady getting me lots of nice film for Christmas)

– More colour photography. I feel like I ‘see’ images in black and white when I am taking them. Doing colour properly is a discipline I need to do better.

– Learn to use flash properly.

– Keep doing my Blip journal, even if it’s not every day.

– Take more portraits.

– And the big one. Think up, decide on and undertake a proper new project (…and maybe get it exhibited somewhere).

Will be back to tick these off, promise.

Zoo

Spent the weekend before Christmas in Chester visiting my girlfriend’s parents.  Took a  trip to Chester Zoo for only the second time.  The light was fantastic, and decided to challenge myself by only taking a telephoto zoom lens with me.  Don’t use the telephoto that often and being limited to it took a bit of getting used to.  Pleased with the results though, and it was perfect for capturing the animals.

Not sure how I feel about zoos, but from the ones I have seen Chester seems to be one of the best, and had some huge enclosures for these majestic creatures.

Trip 35

A few weeks ago my girlfriend H found an old Olympus Trip 35 at a jumble sale for 50p and gave it to me as a present.  A rangefinder with a ‘take a guess’ focussing mechanism and an automatic meter with only two shutter speeds it was not old a bit confusing but we had no idea if it would work.

Stuck a roll of Superia 200 in it and carried it around for a fortnight.  The results below made me really happy, and the camera possibly the bargain of the century!

Lady Grey

This is the first of two posts showcasing some old school film photography of mine from recent months.  I am in no way one of the use luddite digital haters.  Photography is about producing the best image you can.  However every once in a while I love to take an old camera and shoot some 35mm rolls.

This first post was shot over a couple of months with a Nikon FE and a roll of Lomography Lady Grey black and white film.  I love the long feedback loop of shooting like this.  You have to take your time, weight up each shot, and even then it can be months before you see what the result is.  And the result is so often something that you will never replicate in Photoshop!
