Dad 76

About

Dad 76 is a fan-made despiction of the Overwatch playable hero Jack Morrison, better known by his alias Soldier: 76, where he’s portrayed as an overprotective paternal figure who takes care of the younger members of the cast and recurrent maker of dad jokes. The fan-made character became widespread among the fans of Overwatch on several online communities like Tumblr ^[1] in late May of 2016.

Origin

On May 14th, 2016, user chickenwithtie^[8] uploaded an illustration to DeviantArt portraying Soldier: 76 as a protective father making sure his team stays medicated.

Spread

Following the post, Dad 76 art grew popular among the Overwatch fan communities on Tumblr and Reddit. A Novelty Twitter Account devoted to posting as Dad 76^[4] appeared in June 2016. The phenomenon soon attracted the attention of Gameskinny,^[3] who on June 2nd published a compilation of their favorite Dad 76 examples. On June 11th, a thread asking about the spread of Dad 76 jokes appeared on the Overwatch subreddit.^[6] On July 29th, Kotaku^[2] covered the popularity of the Dad 76 headcanon. As of October 19th, 2016, Dad 76 has devoted galleries on Funnyjunk^[5] and Imgur.^[7]
