Allegory of Vanitas (c.1635). Hendrick Pot (Dutch, c.1580-1657). Oil on panel. Frans Hals Museum.
A common theme addressed in Pot’s works was beauty, age and death. This theme culminates in this well-known piece which contains motifs and symbols of sensual love. A woman holds a letter as she brazenly fixes our gaze, while an old woman openly brandishes a skull behind her. The open books and musical instruments could allude to the young lady’s musical talents and charms and her intelligence and education.
