The freedom to worship is one of our most fundamental liberties and we should hold on to it for dear life.
I am proud of my family’s legacy which has prompted me to dedicate my time to serving my community.
As a member of the New York State Assembly, representing my district and my community, I often feel that I am waving an invisible degel. The manner in which I present myself, the things I say, the culture and traditions I honor, even the clothing I choose – these are all my degel.
My shtreimel is my symbol of Jewish pride and not because it’s become trendy, but because I’ve been wearing it since the day I got married in the tradition that goes back in my family several generations. It’s my greatest honor and privilege to do so.
While it’s certainly admirable when those who work hard are recognized for their efforts, fame is clearly not the ultimate goal.
New Yorkers are like a puzzle. We may have different backgrounds, distinct lifestyles, and our own personal aspirations, but each of us is joined in a big picture and together we make a spectacular whole.
Shul is where the cycle of life happens.
