HDP Imrali Delegation’s Press Release on Ocalan’s condition

The concerns and unlawful treatments regarding Mr. Abdullah Ocalan, kept in solitary confinement in Imrali Island since April 5th 2015, increasingly continue, particularly after the coup attempt on July 15th.  Both the analysis made by Mr Ocalan regarding how Imrali Island might be affected by a likely coup attempt, and news and information taking place in Turkish media, as well as, inadequate and careless attitude of government officials, towards the requests concerning worries and unlawful treatments regarding Mr. Abdullah Ocalan increase mistrust between the public and the state.

The Way Out of This Crisis is not Declaring State of Emergency, but Democracy

img_20151116_152354.jpgFive days after the coup attempt on 15th of July, the NSC and Council of Ministers declared a state of emergency in the country. This step shows the coup attempt might have been blocked, but the desire to rule the country with coup-like, authoritative mentality is not.
In this period Turkey will be ruled by Decree-laws against the constitution, the Council of Ministers will be chaired by the President, the jurisdiction of governors will be increased, and vital universal and democratic human rights will be violated while the Turkish Presidential System will be imposed without restraint. Thus, the coup attempt has become a tool and opportunity for the government to purge all opposition and limit democratic rights and freedom.

STATEMENT: We demand an Independent Committee to visit İmralı

The security condition of Mr. Öcalan is not an ignorable matter. The system in İmralı should be questioned itself. We, both as HDP and the İmralı Committee, have communicated from the first day to relevant authorities that Mr. Öcalan, who had exposed the putschists, cannot remain to be unconcerned with, his security condition should be immediately reassessed, and a possible attack to İmralı would drag Turkey into an irreversible civil war. As the İmralı Committee, we have publicly shared the information we obtained from the State. However, this is not sufficient. Besides his legal rights of family and lawyer visits, an independent committee is required to meet Mr. Öcalan in order to satisfy the public concern about his conditions as immediately as possible.

Öcalan had warned Erdogan about this matter a lot. “Tell him, he does not get it, he is acting like an idiot” Öcalan said. “By continuing the resolution process I supported him, if this process ends, the mechanics of coup would step in and he would end up just like Morsi of Egypt” he constantly warned.

Selahattin Demirtaş, co-chair of Peoples’ Democratic Party, defined the attempted coup as “the coup attempt of putchists against putchists” and added: “A clear attitude must be adopted against both pro-coup mindsets and the struggle must be stepped up because the coup mindset that tried to seize power through military forces using tanks and cannons is illegitimate and so is ruling the society through an election that takes place with war, violence, and bombing of the cities, it also is a civil coup.” Continue reading →
