Can cold brew coffee make you sick?
Cold brew coffee’s smooth taste, rich flavor and low acidity have made this trendy drink a global favorite no matter the weather. New research from the University of Georgia shows that it is also the perfect playground for foodborne pathogens. Angela Parra, a graduate research assistant at the Center for Food Safety, is working with Professor Henk Den Bakker to study this exact subject on the UGA Griffin campus.

Signature Lecture Series draws prominent speakers to UGA campus spring semester
Internationally renowned scientists, preeminent philosophers and poets and influential leaders in government, higher education and several other fields will visit the University of Georgia this semester as part of the Signature Lecture Series. Speakers include two Nobel Prize-winning scientists, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and an acclaimed poet and Pulitzer Prize finalist.

He has obtained his PhD degree from Delhi University. Since 2008, Dr. Sulaiman has been working with FDA Atlanta Lab. Prior to that he has worked with the CDC for eleven and half years and a year with the Medical College of Georgia. His major focus is characterization of various emerging infectious pathogens isolated from waterborne, foodborne, and airborne outbreaks, consumer complaints,  sporadic cases, and environmental surveillance samples, at the molecular level (gene/genome) of public health importance. He has developed many novel molecular diagnostic methods, described several new species and genotypes, and published over 97 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He has also contributed for 7 Book Chapters, 145 Meeting Abstracts, and more recently edited two reference books in his area of expertise.

Dr. Zhang received his B.S. in Chemistry from Tsinghua University in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Food Science from the University of Maryland in 2012. Before joining UF, he was an ORISE fellow at the USDA and then an Assistant Professor of biomedical and nutritional sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Dr. Zhang's research interests focus on food safety and food microbiology. His research integrates multi-omics, machine learning, nanotechnology, and biointerface science to study the mechanisms of pathogen persistence. His lab also harnesses interdisciplinary platforms to develop new surveillance toolkits and intervention strategies to mitigate microbial food safety risks.

This International HACCP Alliance accredited course will discuss produce safety, Good Manufacturing Practices, and how to develop food safety programs based on the core principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP). The course will be offered February 29th-March 1st, 2024, at the Tift County Extension Office.
