Overview

The NYC Web Development Fellowship is a 22-week training program designed to equip New Yorkers with the skills necessary to launch careers in web development. This iteration of the Fellowship serves foreign-born New Yorkers who are authorized to work in the United States.

A part of New York City's Tech Talent Pipeline initiative, the NYC Web Development Fellowship is delivered by the Flatiron School, with support from the Robin Hood Foundation.

Goal

The Fellowship is an intensive program designed to train New Yorkers with no prior coding experience to become production-ready web developers.

The program is adapted from The Flatiron School's Web Development Immersive — a course that has successfully trained students for the workforce and helped them find web development jobs.

Eligibility Requirements:

After a competitive application process, 36 Fellows will be admitted into the class beginning June 20, 2016. All admitted Fellows must commit to being on campus from 9am to 6pm, Monday — Friday (dates subject to change).

Structure

Unit One: Fundamentals (4 weeks)

For the first four weeks of in-person instruction, Fellows will complete a curriculum focused on programming fundamentals. The goal of this portion is to get everyone in the Fellowship to a baseline skillset, while ensuring that all admitted Fellows are dedicated to doing the work necessary to be successful during the remainder of this course.

Unit Two: Programming & Collaboration (12 weeks)

This unit is focused on ensuring that Fellows are comfortable with advanced programming concepts, and writing software in a collaborative environment. There will be 3-5 hours of lab exercises. During this phase Fellows will also be required to publish regular technical blog articles and present projects at local Meetups. As we move through various areas of the curriculum, local experts will be invited to speak to the class.

Unit Three: Application Building & Specialization (6 weeks)

Learn by doing. Every student will work on at least three applications throughout the semester. One application will be a robust final project, built in a team over several weeks. Fellows will also work on smaller applications both individually and together. Towards the end of this period, they will have the opportunity to explore specific technologies that interest them, so they can further tailor their knowledge to specific industries.

The direction, the people, the full immersion, being able to focus all of your time on learning to code — it completely changed my life.

Aptitude

Admitted applicants are smart. That said, code as a form of expression and creativity is just as important. Successful graduates of our programs have come from all kinds of backgrounds, including design, social work, activism, and more. Ultimately, students learn more from each other than from lectures. Smart students make great teachers.

Passion

There are lots of great reasons to learn how to program. You can get a great job at a tech startup or launch an app and be the next Mark Zuckerberg! While those are great goals, if that is what you are looking for, the Web Development Fellowship is not for you. The Fellowship approaches programming as a lifelong craft and career, rather than a means to an end. Fellows must be passionate about being great developers and writing code that impacts people.

Culture

Learning is a team sport. We value differences in background and perspective. Previous graduates have comprised people from lots of different backgrounds and occupations. Above all, we're looking for people who are ready to work hard and be active members of the NY Tech Community.
