At the Edge of the End She Will Burn Bright and Brilliant

    image

BUY: LAILAH | GABRIEL | JONAH

We entered Lailah at the beginning of the end… then teetered on the edge of it with Gabriel. Now, with Jonah we will fall from it together.

Today, the final book in The Styclar Saga, Jonah, hits bookstores, and I’m feeling a little like this…

    image

It’s also a good day in the land of paperbacks #InsertShamelessPlugHere as Gabriel releases today too, featuring a Q&A with yours truly, and a sneak peek at Jonah!

It’s been a good seven years since I originally dreamed up Lailah. I didn’t realize when I began to write that what started out as a love story would evolve and end with, well quite frankly, all kinds of madness of EPIC proportions.

    image

Yes, I just used the word EPIC about my own novel, and I think I can be forgiven with all that’s going on in the final installment…

Here’s a little teaser for your reading (and gif!) pleasure!

Lailah travels to the third dimension. AKA Hell.
She also takes a trip to the first dimension. AKA Heaven.

    image

…and that’s not the last of her dimension jumping (hang on—one dimension, two dimensions, three dimensions…) But that’s all I’m saying on the subject for now!

    image

Then Lailah leaps aboard her ship of choice, and finally it sets sail! You may hear some new and very technical terminology once we get going…

    image

Higgs Boson you say? Singlet particles? Linear lines of time? Sounds a little on the timey wimey side of things, but yeah, we get all science-y up in the place.

Not everyone will live to see the end of this story…

    image

But for those of you that have been following the Saga, Jonah may excite you…

    image

…or perhaps it will scare the bejesus out of you!

    image

And for those of you that are just joining now (what?!?!)

    image

…well here’s the good news—you don’t have to wait yearlong gaps for the next part of the story! But, I shall warn you in advance I am a fan of the twist, and an even bigger fan of the cliff hanger!

And if you can’t get enough of the Styclar Saga? Tear into these two prequel stories I wrote for the series, both available on the magical platform Wattpad for free!

Each story takes place before the first book in the saga, and is told from the POV of each of our two leading men.

    JONAH
Jonah is mortal. Though he is technically living and breathing, he might as well be dead. The only shelter he finds to hide from his excruciating existence is in those seldom few moments, just before waking from sleep. In that half dreamlike state, in the unconscious recesses of his mind, he welcomes the darkness. One night, Jonah meets an alluring stranger who makes him want to be awake again. But it’s a short-lived sensation, before he is stolen and dropped on death’s door. The place he once hid will consume him until there is nothing left—nothing but the echo from the flutter of the butterfly’s wing.

    GABRIEL
The year is 1941 and Gabriel has returned from Styclar-Plena to Lucan, Ireland in the middle of the Second World War. Gabriel has spent a hundred years of Earth’s time seeking out Lailah’s soul in the in-between, to no avail. Certain now that Lailah is truly lost, he silences the voices that protest, telling him that she lives—for nothing has ever been more inconceivable. But when Gabriel comes face to face with the very definition of the impossible, he has a choice to make. That choice will set Gabriel on a new path, one that will change the course of his future forever.

Both short stories tie into the series story arc, but can be enjoyed as standalones too!

And when you’re done, and you’ve page flipped your way through Lailah and Gabriel, I’ll see you at the edge of the end for that aforementioned bungee jump!

Cover Fashion: HOW TO BREAK A BOY by Laurie Devore

Those heels, that purse, plus the lipstick? Move aside, boys, trouble is coming.

In this YA contemporary romance, there’s only one rule: Keep your enemies close and your friends closer.

Olivia Clayton has mastered the art of tearing others down to stay on top. She and her best friend, Adrienne, rule their small southern town like all good mean girls do—through intimidation and manipulation.

After Olivia suffers a family tragedy and catches Adrienne sleeping with her boyfriend, Olivia is over it. She decides to make a change, but it’s impossible to resist taking down Adrienne one last time. Up to her old tricks, Olivia convinces golden boy Whit Du Rant to be her SAT tutor and her fake boyfriend. But when it starts to feel real, Whit gets caught up in Olivia and Adrienne’s war.

Olivia may ruin everything she touches, but she won’t go down without a fight—not if it means losing Whit.

And definitely not if it means losing what’s left of herself.

    JANUARY COVER REVEALS

HOW TO BREAK A BOY Playlist by Laurie Devore

Anytime I put together a playlist, I always feel the need to preface – I have super eclectic taste in music so the songs can be all over the place. But first and foremost, I am a sucker for lyrics. Putting together a playlist for HOW TO BREAK A BOY was so fun because it needed just the right mix of bad girl anthems, heartbroken country songs, and deep soul-searching slow jams. Most of these were songs on my original writing and revising playlist but for the final playlist, I did put the songs in an order that fits the narrative of the book. Though the lyrics may not match perfectly, I think these have just the right vibe.

I picked out the lyric in each song that I think best matches the book and gave a little commentary. So without further ado, here’s a musical walk through HOW TO BREAK A BOY:

    • “Devil Town” by Bright Eyes“It turns out I was a vampire myself in the devil town.” – This song is perfect for capturing the oppressive nature of Olivia’s small town. Also, my nod to Friday Night Lights, which captured small town culture perfectly.
    • “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse“You go back to her, and I go back to black” – Great song for a pissed off girl who’s just found out her best friend and boyfriend betrayed her.
    • “Bubblegum Bitch” by Marina and the Diamonds“So pull me closer and kiss me hard/ I’m gonna pop your bubblegum heart”
    • “This Town” by Kacey Musgraves“Way too small for secrets/ ‘Cause they’re way too hard to keep”
    • “Walk Over Me” by Dirtie Blonde“Cause you’re a little bit too nice/ I look a little bit like hell/ 'Cause I’m a little overtired/ And I’m a little overwhelmed”
    • “Portions for Foxes” by Rilo Kiley“I know I’m alone if I’m with or without you/ But just being around you offers me another form of relief”
    • “Break Me Down” by Casey Donahew“Girl, you’re breaking me down” – The first Whit song on the mix.
    • “I May Hate Myself in the Morning” by Lee Ann Womack“Everyone’s known someone that they just can’t help but want” – This one’s pretty self-explanatory in the book ;)
    • “State of Grace” by Taylor Swift (I had to use an acoustic cover for this one on Spotify) – “And I never saw you coming. And I’ll never be the same” – What’s a playlist without Taylor?
    • “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” by Fall Out Boy“Am I more than you bargained for yet? I’ve been dying to tell you anything you want to hear/ Cause that’s just who I am this week”
    • “Long Drive Home” by Turnpike Troubadours“You want something bad, you gotta bleed a little for it/ You gotta look it in the eye, you gotta call it out by name”
    • “Criminal” by Fiona Apple“I’ve been a bad, bad girl/ I’ve been careless with a delicate man/ And it’s a sad, sad world/ When a girl will break a boy just because she can” – You can spot the title in this song. In fact, you can find the whole book in this one if you look hard enough.
    • “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver“I tell my love to wreck it all/ Cut out all the ropes and let me fall”
    • “Lucky Now” by Ryan Adams“I feel like somebody I don’t know/ Are we really who we used to be”
    • “Something Like Olivia” by John Mayer“I keep thinking something like Olivia/ Is what I need to find” – One more Whit song. The lyrics aren’t perfect but I love this one to go with the book.
    • “Prove You Wrong (Acoustic)” by He is We“Take that leap of faith/ If you want to/ Don’t let that broken heart haunt you/ Can you let me try?” – SPOILERS ☺
