Mediterranean migrant arrivals halved in 2017

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that 116,692 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 6 August, with almost 83 percent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This is less than half of the migration arrivals registered in the same period the year before, where 263,436 arrived across the region through 6 August 2016.
