Turkey: Uzbek leader Karimov has died

Turkey has said that Uzbek president Islam Karimov has died, prior to any official Uzbek statement. "Uzbek President Islam Karimov has passed away", Turkish PM Binali Yildirim said on TV. The death risks destabilising central Asia's most populous and most militarised country in a succession contest, with implications for EU efforts to tap Caspian region energy supplies and to reduce dependence on Russia.
