Ready Jet Go! is a CGI animated television series produced by Wind Dancer Films which premiered in the United States as part of the PBS Kids block on February 15, 2016. The series is produced in cooperation with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The show is aimed at kids ages 3 to 8. On August 17, 2016, PBS Kids announced that Ready Jet Go! has been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in early 2018.

Plot

Jet Propulsion and his family are from the fictional planet Bortron 7 which orbits around a red dwarf called Bortron. They live at Boxwood Terrace in Washington, where they study human customs and Earth environments for a travel guide. Jet has made friends with neighborhood kids, including Sydney, Mindy, and Sean, whose parents work at the nearby Deep Space Array. The Propulsions' car turns into a flying saucer, which they frequently use to take the older kids into space. Their alien identities are known to Sean, Mindy, and Sydney, but they otherwise make some effort to conceal their origin. As of early June 2016, it's unclear whether anyone else knows who they really are.

At the end of each episode, scientist Amy Mainzer (also called Astronomer Amy) hosts educational interstitial segments: the segments are not included in the export version.

Bortronians

• Jet Propulsion (voiced by Ashleigh Ball) is the title character of the show and is a humanoid alien. He has red hair and can stretch his body, as his parents can. He is excitable, energetic, and goofy. He is tall for his age and might be older than the other kids. He was instantly popular with the other children the moment he arrived on Earth. He sees the mundane world as a vast and exciting place, and even thinks that words are exciting, such as "surprise", claiming it to be a funny Earth word. He is named after the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is shown to be extremely kind, even to people who are mean to him, such as Mitchell. He possibly likes Sydney, because he danced with her in "How Come the Moon Changes Shape?"

• Carrot (voiced by: Kyle Rideout) is Jet's father. His name from his home planet includes the sound of an elephant trumpeting. He tends to be goofy, like Jet. He often stays home while Celery takes the kids on adventures into outer space, as he doesn't really like going in the flying saucer.

• Celery (voiced by Meg Roe) is Jet's mother. Celery is smart and often takes the kids to space. Her name from her home planet includes the sounds of banging, buzzing, and clanging. She normally drives the family vehicle, as Carrot's driving makes her nervous.

• Face 9000 (voiced by Brian Drummond) is a computer. He is a cyan face with blue facial features projected from a small, round ball. He has a younger brother, Face 9001.

• Sunspot is the pet of the Propulsions. He is described as a dog or cat to "Earthies" not in the know. Sunspot has the ears of a rabbit, the body of a kangaroo, and the tail of a raccoon or a fox. He plays concertina, electric guitar, bugle, pan pipes, and drums. Sunspot is silly and likes to play. His status as a mere "pet" may be somewhat of a put-on: He knows how to read, can talk and sing, and can follow conversations, but often seems confused about what behaviors are expected from a pet. He often functions as a deus ex machina, figuring out what is going on and what needs to be done and then conveying that information to one or more of the children. Carrot and Jet both realize there's more to Sunspot than the obvious, as evidenced by a conversation in "The Greatest Canyon": Carrot: "You ever get the idea there's something he's not telling us?" Jet: "All the time, Dad. All the time."

Earthlings

• Sydney Skelley (voiced by Dalila Bela, Vienna Leacock (in Back to Bortron 7)) is a girl with black hair and green eyes. She idolizes a character named Commander Cressida, named after the moon of Uranus, who has a dog named Sirius, named after the brighest star in Earth's night sky. Sydney is imaginative and very friendly. In "How Come the Moon Changes Shape?" she danced with Jet, in "Kid Kart Derby" she hugged him. Her mother is Dr. Amy Skelley. Sidney's motto is "A kid's place is exploring space." Her friendship with the Propulsion family gives her many opportunities to do just that, which makes her a happy girl.

• Sean Rafferty (voiced by William Ainscough) is a boy with light brown hair, gray eyes, and freckles. Sean probably has asthma; he is shown breathing into a brown paper bag in "Jet Cooks Dinner", and he mentions once when the children are in space that sometimes he has trouble breathing. He is smart and wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, but he has slight claustrophobia. Sean likes to follow the Scientific Method, as shown in many episodes; he even has his own song about it. His mother is Dr. Rafferty.

• Mindy Melendez (voiced by Jaeda Lily Miller) is a 4 1/4-year-old girl (she says so in episode "A Visit From Uncle Zucchini/Mindy's Weather Report") with brown eyes, dark brown hair in two ponytails, and a hat that looks like a teddy-bear face. She stays on Earth when the others go into outer space; she is not allowed to go any further than Jet's yard.

• Zucchini is Jet's maternal uncle and Celery's brother. He is a garbage collector on Bortron and works for the Galactic Garbage Company.

Earthlings

• Mitchell Peterson looks similar to Sean except that he wears glasses and a hat. Along with Mindy, he is younger than Jet, Sean, and Sydney. For his age, he appears to be smarter than Mindy, even knowing about and building an exact replica of the Saturn V rocket. Mitchell is rude, mean, sneaky, and condescending, especially to Jet, and he is out to expose Jet's alien identity to the public. He resorted to cheating at a race in "Kid Kart Derby" and tried to get information about Mindy's recipe in "Solar System Bake Off." Nonetheless, Jet is nice to him. In "Holidays in Boxwood Terrace" it is revealed that he only pretends to be mean and he is really shy and wants to be friends with Jet, Sean, Sydney, and Mindy, but he doesn't know how to do it. But at the end, the kids welcome him into their group.

• Beep is a robot who lives at the Deep Space Array (DSA). She has a twin sister, Boop, who is a Rover on Mars.
• Dr. Rafferty is Sean's scientist mother. She and her co-worker appear in "Visit to Mom's Office." She helps Mindy identify a meteorite in "Mindy's Meteorite Stand."

Mindy's Weather Report: Mindy and Sunspot, watching a weather report broadcast on FACE 9000’s screen, learn of a huge storm system on Saturn. When the other kids hear about it, they mistakenly assume the storm is somewhere local. Mayhem ensues as the misinformation spreads and everyone rushes around to prepare, while Mindy meanwhile “broadcasts” her own weather report from Jet’s house.

Asteroids, Meteors, and Meteorites: Sean is determined to beat his mystery competitor at a video game of “Astro-Tracker.” When Face 9000 tells the kids about the Asteroid Belt, Sean realizes that the best way to learn about asteroids is to see them for himself. Celery flies them out to space, and the kids learn the difference between an asteroid, a meteor, and a meteorite. Worried at first, Sean learns that only the rare asteroid (called a meteorite) makes it all the way to Earth, so he decides that he’ll become really good at “Astro-Tracker” to prepare for the future when he can be on a team of scientists who track rogue asteroids. Mindy's Meteorite Stand: When Mindy and Sunspot are digging in the yard, they discover a unique rock that Mindy is convinced is a meteorite. The kids conduct a series of tests to find out and amazingly the rock passes each test. “Meteorite fever” grips the neighborhood, as Mindy sets up a stand so people can see her meteorite, and bring her rocks to assess. In the end, a DSA scientist confirms that Mindy’s rock actually isn’t a meteor… but, wait, the random rock Mindy’s sitting on is!

Comet Fever: The neighborhood is having a star gazing party when Mindy discovers what may be a new comet. Asteroid Patrol: When Sean learns that asteroids are floating around the solar system (potentially), he decides to set up a homemade asteroid watch-station in the treehouse, and gets all the other kids involved. Eventually, Sean’s mother and her colleague at the DSA help Sean and the others understand how scientists monitor the skies for asteroids, a job that Sean doesn’t need to do all by himself.

As the group in the saucer searches for, yet can’t find, the Northern Lights, Sunspot and Mindy work on a backyard project – making their own amazing backyard “Northern Lights” display! Treehouse Space Station: When the kids realize that they all want to use the treehouse at the same time for different activities, arguments break out. Mindy tries to help by creating a schedule for each kid to use the treehouse alone. In the end, the kids realize they need each other’s company and ideas in order to be successful in their own projects. In resolving their problem, the kids learn to think like the scientists on the International Space Station, who have to find a solution to the problem of getting along while doing different projects in a small space.

Date Night: When Jet realizes that it’s the anniversary of Carrot and Celery’s first date, he wants to recreate that first picnic they had on one of Bortron 7’s moons. The kids all get involved to help create the perfect date night. Face on the Fritz: When the kids are trying to build a new pet house for Sunspot and FACE 9000 gives them mixed-up directions, they learn that it is time for FACE 9000 to get upgraded. In the meantime FACE 9000’s “substitute,” the “DATA-BOX,” is an old Earth computer from the early 1980s. The kids need to learn how to give instructions in the way computers understand, putting them in charge of using technology in an active way. When FACE 9000 comes back, they have learned to appreciate him, as well as to be more independent thinkers.

Sunspot and the Great Red Spot: Sunspot is determined to get to Jupiter to meet his fellow pet aliens, other members of the Red Spot Club. The Club is thousands of years old. They meet annually at an exact time to observe and celebrate the Red Spot. But, mechanical problems with the family wagon/saucer may thwart the trip. The kids and Celery do everything they can to get Sunspot to Jupiter and his Red Spot Club meet-up. Uncle Zucchini Babysits: Uncle Zucchini finally gets to Earth for a visit, just as the Propulsion parents are called away on a work assignment. Uncle Zucchini volunteers to watch the kids. In the process of helping the kids coax Sunspot into taking a bath, Uncle Zucchini learns about the three states of water (solid, liquid, and gas).

Mindy's Mystery: Mindy can't sleep one night, having been kept awake by a sweet, strong smell from outside. Sydney, Sean, Jet, and Sunspot become detectives and try to crack the case of the sweet smell. At the same time, Mitchell is investigating what kept him up last night - a very bright "annoying" light. In the end, there's a common source - the sweet smell was from a nocturnal flower, the Moonflower, which only blooms at night, after sundown. And the bright light was from the Moon!

As they learn about what a black hole really is, Mitchell discovers that science holds enough mysteries to keep him busy for many years

Satellite Selfie: The kids learn that they can use links to different websites to see a satellite view of their house. Mindy notices that Jet's house is not in the image. That's because these images are from sometime over the past 2 years, and not live images from space. With Dr. Rafferty's help, the kids identify the next time a satellite will pass over their neighborhood, and try to gather for a 'space selfie' next to Jet's house.

Before heading home, the family decides that the old, dependable saucer operating system works just fine for them.

After learning about the causes of moonquakes, the kids attempt to build a Moonquake-proof structure. My Fair Jet: Sean and Sydney are planning to take Jet to the DSA Open House the upcoming weekend. The Earth kids are nervous that he will get in front of a crowd of strangers and forget to keep the secret that he's an alien from Bortron 7. After a hilarious outburst from Jet, the kids are motivated to try to 'train' him to behave less like an alien from outer space, and more like a 'regular Earthie kid.' Jet's doing well until he ends up using his Bortronian jet-pack to fly up to rescue the DSA weather balloon when it's about to get away in some bad weather.

From Pluto with Love: As the kids get ready for Valentines Day by making their own valentines out of paper, Mindy continues to feel sad that little, frozen Pluto is so far out at the edge of the solar system. When Sydney shows Mindy a newly-downloaded, full-color image of Pluto as seen by the New Horizons spacecraft, Mindy is intrigued by Pluto's 'heart' of ice. Mindy once again feels that Pluto deserves our love, since it's no longer considered a planet, but is orbiting out there at the edge of our solar system, like a big frozen Valentine. She asks Sydney to bring her own little hand-made Valentine to Pluto on her behalf. Sydney leads an expedition of the kids to Pluto to bring Mindy's Valentine, experience the frozen dwarf planet themselves, and bring back their report to Mindy. A Star is Born: Sydney is directing the kids in a backyard movie, making her version of a Commander Cressida story about the formation of a star. The other kids all have parts, but Sunspot has the lead - as the star! The kids' movie coincides with the celebration of a star being born near (a.k.a. 10 light years away from) Bortron 7!

The Mindysphere: Mindy's mom has gradually been giving Mindy permission to go a little bit farther in the neighborhood on her own, and Mindy is trying to map out exactly what her boundaries are. Sean compares her 'Mindysphere' to the helisophere-the boundaries of the Sun's influence. The kids get Celery to fly them out past the heliosphere into true interstellar space. Back on Earth, they make their own Voyager 1 (out of a wagon) and take Mindy to the outermost edges of the Mindysphere! Lone Star: Sydney knows a lot about Boxwood Terrace's early history, and she tells Jet stories about a local pioneer who went by the nickname 'Lone Star.' He got that name because he was an early astronomer who liked the hills of Boxwood Terrace for their excellent views of the night sky, and built the first Observatory on the hill that now sits at the center of the Deep Space Array. As Jet imagines Sydney's story of Lone Star, the kids turn the story into a Western-flavored musical.

Jet's Time Machine: Jet uses his Bortronian skills to test his first experimental Time Machine so he and his Earthie friends can go back to an exact time - 3 minutes earlier - in order to see a spectacular moment in a meteor shower that they missed. A mistake happens the first time, so he keeps trying to go back in time to fix the first mistake, but more mistakes keep happening and snowball into hilarity.

Then the saucer malfunctions and they receive news of a possible solar storm headed their way. In a nail-biter, Jet and Sunspot do a mid-outer space repair job - as per Celery's instructions -with Carrot comically adapting to the Moon environment. In the end, the saucer is fixed, Carrot is rescued, and the solar storm heads in the opposite direction of the Moon. Jet Can't Sleep: When a loud thunderstorm hits the neighborhood one evening, the Propulsions are woken up. They gather in the kitchen as the noisy storm rages on, and Jet is too excited to get back to sleep. Carrot, Celery, and Sunspot are sympathetic - they're in the same boat! During the night they all learn about Earth storms as compared to storms on other planets. And then they all try to get Jet to fall back asleep, a seemingly impossible task. They use more and more absurd methods, until Celery has a conventional Earthie solution: sing a lullaby.

Jet is looking for the Spirit of Christmas, something intangible that Sean and Sydney can't quite define. Mitchell wants to belong to the group, but doesn't know how to do it. Both kids get their answer in a heartfelt conclusion.

A Hammer and a Feather: Sydney shows Jet and Sean a cool experiment - dropping different items from the same height to see which reaches the ground first. And the reason is atmosphere - or lack of it - on the Moon. Jet laughs - really? Wait, what's atmosphere? Well, the kids know the best way to find out - into the wagon/saucer! Our kids and Celery fly to the edge of the Earth's atmosphere to learn what it does... and then go to the Moon. Is the atmosphere around the Moon the same as the Earth's? And what happens when our kids do the hammer-feather drop on the lunar surface? Commander Mom: Sydney brings Jet and Sean to the DSA to visit her mom, DR. AMY SKELLEY, and check out her work. Dr. Skelley is a robotics engineer who makes outer space robotic and gadget dreams a reality.

Ratings

The series has gained 22 million viewers, according to PBS, including 7.6 million on broadcast television. The series has also been streamed over 37 million times on the PBS Kids website and app.

Critical reception

Ready Jet Go! has received critical acclaim. Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media rated it a 5/5, saying "Thoroughly engaging and packed with educational content, this exceptional series is a fun way for kids to learn about science and astronomy. Jet's excitement for the human experience is matched only by Sean and Sydney's eagerness to learn all about outer space; put the three of them together, and it's a true celebration of the joy of discovery. Whether it's executing a rescue mission for a Mars rover or combining daily chores with experiments in force, Jet and his friends have a lot to teach kids through their own experiences." Gina Catanzarite of Parent's Choice praised it, saying "Although the vocabulary and science explanations may be beyond the scope of the youngest viewers, the premise, characters, interesting art direction and upbeat action should hold their attention. Older kids are more likely to grasp the facts and even if they don't remember them all, Ready Jet Go! will at the very least inspire curiosity, and plenty of questions when they take the time to gaze up at the skies above them." The show currently has a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDB, a rating of 4.3/5 on Google Play, and rating of 4.6/5 stars on Amazon.

Discrepancies

In "A Visit from Uncle Zucchini" (15a) and "Mindy's Weather Report" (15b), Sunspot stays on Earth and does not travel into space with Celery and the older children, but the van take-off sequence shows him buckling his seat belt. He is also shown in the saucer as it approaches Saturn in "A Visit from Uncle Zucchini."

In "A Visit from Uncle Zucchini" (15a), in which Zucchini is supposed to be coming to Earth for a vacation, Jet says that it's Zucchini's first visit to the solar system. Yet in "Sunspot and the Great Red Spot" (22a), Zucchini has supposedly been bringing Moonbeam to Jupiter for the annual meeting of the Red Spot Club for many years.

In "Mindy's Weather Report" (15b), the number of dolls sitting in front of Mindy's "television set" as she gives her weather report changes several times. It starts at three, then there are four, then five, and then four again.

In "Jet's First Halloween Part 1" (25a), Carrot had to settle for buying other vegetables because the store was out of pumpkins, but three scenes show standard pumpkin jack-o'-lanterns in front of the Propulsions' house.
