Katharine Bear "Katy" Tur (born October 26, 1983)[1] is an American broadcast journalist working as correspondent for NBC News, based in New York City. Tur is an anchor of MSNBC Live and she reports for all platforms of NBC News, including Early Today, Today, NBC Nightly News, Meet the Press, WNBC-TV, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel.[2]
Early life and education[edit]
Tur is the daughter of journalists Hanna Zoey Tur (formerly Robert "Bob" Tur) and Marika Gerrard. She has one brother, James. She graduated from Brentwood School in 2001,[3] and from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2005 with a BA, Philosophy.[4][5] In 2009, Tur received AP’s Best Spot News Award for her coverage of the March 2008 Crane Collapse on the Upper East Side.[6] Tur is fluent in Spanish.[6]
Career[edit]
Tur has reported for WPIX-TV, News 12 Brooklyn, KTLA, and HD News/Cablevision.[7] Tur worked as a storm chaser for The Weather Channel on the network's VORTEX2 team.[8]
NBC News[edit]
Tur joined NBC News in 2009 at NBC's flagship station, WNBC-TV. While at NBC News, she covered the death of Cory Monteith, a motorcycle attack on an SUV, and the MH-370 search. She covered the Donald Trump presidential campaign for the network as its campaign-embedded reporter. Several times during the campaign, Trump singled her out in his criticism of the press. At an event in Florida, she was booed by Trump supporters and, according to other journalists, was subjected to verbal harassment. According to Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, "[he] didn't mean it in any malicious way",[9] and he did not want anyone to attack or harass Tur.[10] Tur reflected on covering the Trump campaign and on some comments directed at her ("She's back there. Little Katy. She's back there.") in an article for Marie Claire.[11]
