I’ve been reading more kindle books, I’ve bought maybe 3 or 4 books in the last year.

So what have I been reading? ‘

To let you know what I like so you can see how you’d like my suggestions, I’d say that Heinlein, Niven, Pournelle, SM Stirling , Eric Flint, David Drake, David Weber, Forstchen, John Ringo and, recently, Tom Kratman, BV Larson and Jack Campbell/John Hemry are my favorites in the sci-fi realm.

If you haven’t read the last two, check them out. BV Larson’s Swarm series is my favorite of his, Undying Mercenaries is pretty good too.

Campbell/Hemry’s series I like the best are The Lost Fleet, it gets bogged down in the second and third book of the second part of that series (due to the husband/wife stuff where the captain (wife) keeps giving the admiral (husband) a hard time on the bridge during operations), but overall it’s at least as good as Honor Harrington. I got pretty sick of Harrington by the 6th or 7th book and got back into it around book 10 or so. I skipped a few books in the middle of that when I last read it.

The other series of his that’s very good is Stark’s War. It’s a very good look at where we could be headed in a couple hundred years with a soldier class that doesn’t interact with civilians and everybody thinks that voting is a waste of time cuz all you do is trade one set of fuckheads for another (sound familiar?). It’s told from the POV of a sergeant.

I met Kratman when he co-authored a Posleen War book with Ringo, Yellow Eyes that’s fantastic, and his series that starts with A Desert Called Peace is very good. It’s about a future where the UN achieves their goal of getting rid of America…by getting people like me to leave Earth. Then they start to want to take over the new Earth but….meet some pushback so they get terrorists to start a war that starts with a zeppelin crashing into a tall skyscraper. It’s sorta….. familiar.

He’s the one who wrote my favorite definition of insanity/ definition of the Democratic party.

Where you do everything differently yet expect the same results.

 

On to the Kindle authors!

While I don’t think Taylor Anderson is primarily a kindle guy, that’s how I met him. His Destroyerman series is pretty darn good. It’s like a cross between Forstchen’s Lost Regiment series and Sliders.

There are a bunch of parallel universes that include the Earth but they developed differently. Some very similar, some very different.

The one they go to is very different, to the point of vastly different flora and fauna.

It’s a 10 or more book series and I read it all. It was a good week.

 

I’ve also read every book by PK Lentz, all 5 or 6 or so. His books also have the different universe thing going on, Layers he calls them.

They’re cheap, I just paid 99 cents to pre-order his next book, but very good. He’s obviously into ancient history. One book takes place in Asgard, another in ancient Greece. I first read it before reading Thucydides and I’m now re-reading his ancient Greece series (two books) and it’s funny how I understand it a lot more now. Our Hero is not in Thucydides, but many of the rest are.

I enjoyed his books as much as I’ve enjoyed just about any other author except maybe Heinlein, Niven and Pournelle (even though I wish Pournelle had finished his Janissaries series)

 

Glen Doucette is another author I like. His series about an immortal is up and down, but cheap and worth at least checking out. He’s not some superman/godlike guy, just some dude who was born tens of thousands of years ago and is still alive. He hasn’t been friends with Alexander the Great and Caesar and that kind of stuff, he just goes around, getting drunk and seeing what’s what. The first one is probably the best, but the rest are pretty good.

 

Marc Alan Edeilhet’s Stiger series is another pretty good one.  As I recall, it takes place on another planet where they lost technology. Sorta like Stirling/Drake’s The General series (which is a great series), without the cool, riding dogs thing.

 

I’ve talked about it before, but Dennis Taylor’s We Are Legion. We Are Bob and the sequel, For We Are Many, is very good. A guy pays to have his head frozen and wakes up in the future but it’s not quite what he expected. You’ll want to be Bob.

 

Another series I like is Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force. It gets better as you go and it started pretty good.

I don’t want to write about authors I’ve read that suck, since the books usually only cost a buck or three, I’ll let you figure that out but I will touch on one.

The Eden Plague starts out….okay, but quickly gets bad. Let’s Kill Off Half Of Humanity For Some Stupid Reason bad. Let’s make the good guys into fucking vicious assholes bad. Our Hero is a moron who always does the wrong thing, which wrong thing usually results in millions of deaths. But his peeps are LOYAL!!!!!! Geez. I’d put a bullet in his head by the end of the first book because, while I don’t like most people, that doesn’t mean I want you all dead.

Events are turning me into a radical skeptic. I no longer believe what I read, unless what I am reading is an empirically verifiable account of the past. I no longer have confidence in polls, because it has become impossible to separate the signal from the noise. What I have heard from the media and political class over the last several years has been so spectacularly proven wrong by events, again and again, that I sometimes wonder why I continue to read two newspapers a day before spending time following journalists on Twitter. Habit, I guess. A sense of professional obligation, I suppose. Maybe boredom.

Yeah, we’ve been watching that. From a high of 4 or 5, I was down to one newspaper a couple weeks ago and now I’m on none. I was almost done with the Free Beacon what with all the pushing lying fakenews bullshit.

WARNING ADVISORY TO BORDER PATROL AGENTS IN RGV SECTOR

Recent events in Tamaulipas, Mexico, specifically in and around the city of Reynosa, pose a special risk to U.S. Border Patrol agents working in the region.

The Reynosa faction of the Mexican Gulf Cartel recently lost its leader and the group is engaging in open warfare with Mexican authorities and possibly with rival factions or other transnational criminal groups. Open source reports indicate gunbattles and use of grenades and other explosives in the fighting.

Border Patrol agents working the line in any station’s area of operations immediately across the largely open border from Reynosa, Mexico, are advised to employ extra caution in the performance of their duties. Stray rounds from firearms have previously injured U.S. law enforcement personnel on the border.

They had to worry about Obama’s gun running and now cartels, embolded and empowered by Obama’s porous borders, are now using hand grenades against American border agents.

And they still probably have the restrictive Rules of Engagement. I’m not saying they should be free-fire zones, but any threat should be treated quickly and overwhemingly. It’s unfair to them otherwise since they’re fighting people with fucking hand-grenades.

REYNOSA — Fear and panic filled the streets of Reynosa on Sunday night as rival gunmen battled during a three-hour firefight that saw automatic weapons and grenades used. Surprisingly, Mexican authorities were absent for most of the melee…

The ants join together by the thousands, trapping enough air to float on the water’s surface in a makeshift life raft and survive for days, weeks or even months until they find dry land again.

A festival in Ohio is trying to make it okay for women to go topless.

According to organizers, state liquor agents with the Ohio Investigative Unit have allegedly threatened to file charges against ComFest or shut down alcohol sales at the festival if topless women are allowed to attend and remain at the festival.

A comment at Stoaty’s yesterday reminded me of this guy. Michael Moschen. I’ve always figured he was a math nerd who took lots of acid and became a juggler.

This is long, but it’s mesmerizing. The first coupla minutes are a little slow, but once he drops the first ball it gets very impressive.

 

It might have an “adult content” warning, it’s cuz he’s wearing some weird looking, hippy loincloth.

 

If you want to take less time, here he is ‘juggling’ in a triangle.

 

That is freaky. There are times where it’s nearly impossible to see him catch the balls, they’re suddenly in his hand. Sometimes you can barely see him throw the ball, they’re just suddenly careening around the triangle. Weird.

This shows a few of the things he does. If you see the part with the torches, he is holding onto them firmly not spinning them in his palm.

 

He does stuff that will have you yelling at the screen, YOU CAN’T DO THAT! Seriously.

He sometimes plays music by juggling. I hadn’t seen this bit before, it’s a different triangle

 

I used to have Moschen In Motion on VHS, but I can’t find it. I’d like to get it on DVD. It was very cool.

 

That appears to be most of it, but it’s more than 30 minutes. It’s very entertaining if you’re into that sort of thing.

I’ve tried not to use the word “mesmerizing”, but that’s the one that describes him. I kept finding a grin on my face as I watched him.

The Bible does not explicitly discuss abortion, and there’s no evidence that Christians traditionally believed that life begins at conception. St. Thomas Aquinas, the father of much of Catholic theology, believed that abortion was murder only after God imbued fetuses with a soul, at 40 days or more after conception.

So…. historically recent? In about 30 seconds of searching, we find this scholarly dude writing about how there was significant discussion in early Christianity about its sinfullness.

So what you’re saying is that if you pass a law saying it’s not a tax it is a tax, except when it’s not, and Trump’s a doody-head?

Sounds like a typical lefty operation. It accomplishes the opposite of what they claim while actually being an op against something they hate but cannot defeat legislatively (the death penalty).

I look forward to seeing this ignored in the major media, cuz it’s a local story. Not like a Republican city alderman in West Bumfuck, Arkansas being caught taking money from someone who once said a nice thing about Paula Deen (racist!).

 

I was just thinking this would be a good idea.

On the heels of major shakeups at the Fox News Network, an alternative conservative network is being actively discussed amongst conservative fat cats.

A well-placed source close to the proposal tells Mediaite that serious discussions are underway to create an alternative conservative cable network on the belief that the Fox News Network is moving too far to the left. The source, who is engaged in the talks, says a meeting is planned for today with two prominent high-powered television executives, some underperforming conservative networks and people who have an interest and the ability to fund a new network.

 

Hiring O’Reilly and picking up Hannity and Tucker Carlson would be a nice start.

Having a channel without leftists like Shep and Geraldo would be nice. Unfortunately, they’re going to have to hire from the same pool of lazy, stupid, ignorant and biased fools as the rest so we’d still have idiocies like Megan McCain being asked what she thinks.
