Cool in the morning with lite breeze and then warmed up, cooled off, got windy, wind died down and then it roared! Ahh, South Dakota springtime! LOL
- Narrow nasty little creek
Real nice this morning then the wind started to pick up this afternoon. I went around the fence up west this morning, ran to Punkin Center and mailed off them spur straps and ate at noon. Fueled up and came home and worked on a new design for a martingale. the old one didn’t set quite right at the neck. This is a much better design. Straps are a bit long tho. I need to bring it in and rework it.
I saddled Mijo and gathered the horses and sorted of the gelding we are going to be riding to branding’s. First one tomorrow if it don’t rain out again. Left Woody with the mares and colts. He really thinks he’s a stud now!
While I had them in I used them for sorting practice with Mijo. He’s getting to where he will really get in the ground when he stops and comes around. Of course, he likes to work them as he thinks he’s a stud also. Wind is really coming up now and a big ol’ dark cloud is hanging in the northwest. They are not calling for much chance of rain tonight or tomorrow. Wind is supposed to gust up over 40 mph tomorrow and the next day. That ought to make branding fun!
This is making the rounds of the internet, so I decided to share. It is something we need to remember. Especially now when we have politicians trying to take away many of your freedoms.
PEOPLE ASK WHY?
Why I Carry a Gun
My old grandpa said to me ‘Son, there comes a time in every man’s life when he stops bustin’ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and
usually it’s when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin.’
I don’t carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.
I don’t carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world..
I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.
I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government..
I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry.
I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.
I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.
I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.
I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.
I don’t carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.
Police protection is an oxymoron.
Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.
Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin’…..author unknown (but obviously brilliant)

You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it’s too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.
With guns, we are ‘citizens’. Without them, we are ‘subjects’.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
If you value your freedom, please spread this anti gun–control message to all of your friends.
The purpose of fighting is to win.
There is no possible victory in defense.
The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.
The final weapon is the brain.
All else is supplemental.
SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN!
SWITZERLAND‘S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE.
SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!
IT’S A NO BRAINER!
DON’T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.
I got these from Alan Nations Blog.
UPDATE IN COMMENTS
This is a picture of my Grandma Bauer when she was a young lady and her family. Quite a few left Illinois and came out here. She is on the far left side in the light. I thought Connie, who has a blog on old pictures might enjoy this.
As I understand it, Great Grampa Bauer gave each of his sons, 80 acres of land on their 18th birthday. Dad always thought it was strange that so many would sell 80 acres of good farm land to move out here to the semi desert! He loved to go back to Illinois and look at the crops they could raise.
How would you ladies like to cook for that crew everyday, with a wood stove? This would have been taken somewhere close to the turn of the century.
Grandma and her younger sister Eve, came out here not long after this and homesteaded next to a brother.
There is a set of twin boys in this picture. Can you spot them?
I ran some food up to a neighbors who live about 45 miles north of us. The wife was walking in the yard the other day and just suddenly died. Anyerism they say. 48 years old and leaves a husband and son and young daughter. A very Christian family and they are handling it as best as can be suspected, but it was sure a shock to all. His father had died just the evening before from complications of cancer, which while still troubling, was at least to be expected, as he was in his 90’s.
Afterwards I drove north of them and visited my cousin’s family. The grandfather is older than me and the son and daughter in law have 5 kids. What a lively bunch. As I was leaving, the oldest son had a young filly hooked up to an old harrow cart and was driving her around the yard. The young filly was very at ease and wasn’t bothered by it at all. I told him I had lots of horses who would fit all them kids, but they seem to thinmk they have enough! Imagine that! I always enjoy visiting with this bunch. The children are all home schooled and sharp as tacks!
So it was a wistful, but yet again, joyful evening. I need to get up there more often.
- closer view, see the horses in the corral
- Looking at the place from the eastside, looking west
- Nipper Do the bitch, but I call her Nip! 😉
- Shadow, the stupid dog
- letting them rest and catch their wind, between rows
- only place for your feet on horses disc
- drivers view when discing tree rows
- stupid colts in the way!
- moving young pairs
- foggy sunrise
- Old homesite soiuth east of house , in the fog
- my favorite rocky hill
Here’s some pictures of Brad, the young guy who starts and trains horses in this area. He does a whale of a job, is just too busy, hard to get any colt to him as he is usually full up.
- notice Brad rubbing all over the colt
- Easing him around
- snubbed up and getting comfortable
- Brad’s Dad is there so his horse can help keep the colt calm and lend moral support
- working the left side
- He’s working both sides
- the colt accepted the flag real nicely
- putying some pressure on and letting him figure out how to move away from it
- JUst saddled and letting him work the kinks out, this was the colts 3rd saddle and he was fine.
Bullshit!
Everyday is earthday to those who really care for the earth. The farmers and ranchers and loggers and fishermen and miners. If you are not making a living from the earth and protecting and taking care of what earns you a living, you probably have no real concept of what it’s like to do so.
Go blow it out your ass ecofreaks who really don’t care, but just want money and to see mankind off of this planet. Oh, all but you and your stinky friends. You are all liars, commies and idiots as far as I am concerned.
