Global Climate Action  

At the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) in Paris, it was agreed that mobilizing stronger and more ambitious climate action by all Parties and non-Party stakeholders is urgently required if the goals of the Paris Agreement are to be achieved.

In decision 1/CP.21, the commitments from all actors are recognized, including those launched through the Lima–Paris Action Agenda, as well as the urgent need to scale up the global response to climate change and support greater ambition from governments.

At COP 22 in Marrakech, a High-Level Event on Accelerating Climate Action was held to highlight outcomes from the Action Events throughout the conference and culminated with the launching of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action; a new framework to catalyse and support climate action.

Special Envoy Hakima El Haite

Hakima El Haite is the Special Envoy for Climate Change from the Kingdom of Morocco. She was the Moroccan Delegate Minister to the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment, in charge of the Environment, the Special Envoy for COP 22, and the Vice President of the Bureau of COP 21. A passionate proponent of Climate Change Action, the Environment and Human Dignity, Ms. El Haite has more than 15 years of experience as a successful entrepreneur in the environmental sector, and decades of engagement with Civil Society. In 2016, Ms. El Haite was appointed by the President of the French Republic, Mr. François Hollande, Knight of the National Order of the Légion d’Honneur. Mr. Laurent Fabius, then President of COP 21, also honoured her with the hammer of the COP 21 Presidency. Her long-term commitment to civil society, the depth of her entrepreneurial experience and the scope of her mandate as a policy-maker are the axes on which she intends to rely.

Minister Inia Seruiratu

Inia Seruiratu has been the Fijian Minister for Agriculture and the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management since 2014. Prior to this he held ministerial appointments for fisheries, forestry and provincial development. For over 10 years, Mr. Seruiratu has served as chairperson, director, and member for various national and international boards and bodies, in both the private and public sector. This has provided him with in-depth insights into the dynamics of engaging with an array of actors and has exposed him to the intricacies of local and international policy development issues, including climate change, in different sectors but more especially in food security, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, rural development, fisheries and forestry. Mr. Seruiratu is a strong advocate for strengthening the resilience of local communities against the impacts of natural disasters and climate change, having experienced first-hand the impacts of sea-level rise and coastal erosion in his own village.

NAZCA aims to track the mobilization and action that are helping countries achieve and exceed their national commitments to address climate change.
