Hey, @jack, Iโd like to nominate @aaronpk and @t to lead @bluesky, perhaps with an assist from @benwerd. Theyโve got quite the head start with the #IndieWeb!

I think its a great thing that Twitter is going down this path, but I do wish that theyโd build upon prior art. Iโm also fairly suspicious that this is just a convenient way to work around policing its platform, which it clearly needs to do.

Why do ovens have a button for toggling the internal light off and on? If the oven is on, the light should be on. If the oven is off, the light should be off. Simple. #TheDesignOfEverydayThings #FoodieUX

@cleverdevil Say you wanted to use the light to raise the temperature just a little to nurture your sourdough leaven ???
@jeremycherfas sounds like an edge case to me ;)
@cleverdevil in a college physics class I had to determine the difference in bake time with and without the light on.
eli, Nov 24 2019 on micro.blog
@eli verdict?
@cleverdevil why use more, even a bit of electricity then needed? Would love to know...has to add a mimnimal fraction of heat
@cleverdevil I mean, it was technically faster with the light on...but by a completely negligible amount. The math also didnโt take into account energy usage, and I bet itโd be a wash if you did because most appliances are limited to how much power they can draw.
eli, Nov 24 2019 on micro.blog
when cleaning the oven you might want light but no heat
The cleaning cycle could keep the light off :)
๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ I still need to clean mine by hand and itโs useful to have light for that.
@jgmac1106 the heat and electricity are so minimal, I think itโs worth it.
When the door is open, the light is on!
@cleverdevil I thought it was all about edge cases.
sometimes you need the light on and the oven off, like when you want your yeast to raise at a controlled low temperature, or you need to make yogurt overnight
Wow, honestly I never thought of this but youโre totally right! #TheHottestOfTakes

Lots of great replies to my query re: Slack threads. Speaking of Slack, it'd be fantastic if I could organize channels into groups. At present, I have many channels in my workspace, wish I could arrange them, group them, and collapse them.

@cleverdevil nope. I find that slack solves 0 problems, and creates even more.
@Burk Slack itself is a useful tool for me, but the threads feature is just so weird.
@cleverdevil I use them only occasionally. No one else I know does.
I wish I could say no, but some people do
@ddykstal @cleverdevil I love threads, especially on what are meant to be "announcement" channels. Keeps the noise down. I had to use them repeatedly until everyone else slowly came around.
@cleverdevil No. They are terrible. I could manage them if Slack channels simply were actual lists of threads. This wierd hybrid thing where there's the general channel discussion and then also threads is nonsensical.
bix, Nov 21 2019 on micro.blog
They make me feel old
@cleverdevil dislike them so much, they hide too much conversation and data. I prefer Flowdock's model of threading colors.
@jack @cleverdevil I think you're right about repetition. Folks need to see how they are useful.
I think they fulfill a need, but perhaps not in an ideal way. Iโm not sure how Iโd change them, though.
Yes, this. I feel like Slack is basically "OK, boomering" me every time I see a thread.
@cleverdevil I can never figure out when something should be a thread versus in the main channel. So no, they suck.
@canion I feel the same way. The use case just isn't there for me.
I do! Turns Slack into a message board

I find them better than not having them. Baffled that you canโt /me in them though.
I wish they could be disabled / useless & annoying โfeatureโ
They just end up being one more place to look for where those notifications came from or where a conversation continued. They cause chaos during high priority incidents.
If everyone uses threads properly, all info will be in one place and not cluttering the channel where multiple separate conversations are happening at the same time
แด แด แด แด (excited for cranberry sauce. don't @ me), Nov 22 2019 on twitter.com
I mean I guess. But the design is sort of trash IMO. Itโs a weird conversation within a conversation. Seems like it would be better handled with DMs or short-lived channels.
โIf everyone uses (mechanism which splits up conversations) all info will be in one placeโ is definitely not how I aim to live my life ๐
Actually just โIf everyone uses X properlyโ aaaand youโve already lost me
DMs and short-lived channels are invite-required, no? A thread is opt in for anyone in the channel, is permanent (depending on your team account...), and doesnโt clutter your channel list
แด แด แด แด (excited for cranberry sauce. don't @ me), Nov 22 2019 on twitter.com
I get the idea, but people donโt generally use them that way. Instead, 90% of threads that I encounter are two people talking for like three messages.
Once I started thinking of Slack channels as a message boards instead of one group convo, my Slack issues have mostly gone away for me. One org Iโm in actually requires threading conversations, which works really well.
แด แด แด แด (excited for cranberry sauce. don't @ me), Nov 22 2019 on twitter.com
Thatโs a poor choice of words on my part then
แด แด แด แด (excited for cranberry sauce. don't @ me), Nov 22 2019 on twitter.com
True facts, also, while it doesnโt clutter the channel list, itโs not like it needs help among 200 channels or so, but more pernicious than that, it creates a secondary location to the channel list, the oft overlooked โAll threadsโ, which youโre then trying to find stuff in too
โrequires threading conversationsโ ... blink twice if we need to send rescue
Fair. I bounce between All Threads and All Unreads all day so between those two I get everything. Iโm also an Inbox Zero person so ymmv

they're annoying but threading in general is necessary and threading properly is hard... how do you like Twitter threads instead?
Theyโre pretty half-baked in my opinion. Theyโre clunky to interact with, and.. no /giphy

The Mandalorian is really great. Haven't watched the second chapter yet. Still undecided if it's better than Rogue One, which I consider the best post-original-trilogy motion picture content prior to The Mandalorian. What'd you think of Rogue One?
I enjoyed Rogue One as a whole, but didnโt think it was all that great. The writing was all over the place, though it did finish quite strong. In my opinion, The Mandalorian is betterโฆ so far. Chapter two really cemented that for me. A big step up from the first chapter.
Really excited to watch it tonight.
Excited to have time to watch this weekend
Play Jedi Fallen Order itโs amazing.
Curious to hear both of yall's Disney rankings. For me: 1) TFA - very fun, establishes the new characters 2) TLJ - very interesting, if uneven 3) Rogue One - 2nd half of movie is great 4) Solo - fine, unnecessary 5) My 8 yo enjoys Resistance cartoon Haven't watched Rebels
I go back and forth between TFA and TLJ. I think the highs of TLJ are higher (Rey + Kyle in Snokeโs chamber!), but agree with you that TFA was much more even. Rogue One was a bit of a missed opportunity because of its really poor start. You nailed Solo โ โfine, unnecessary.โ
I think I'm: 1) Rogue One - don't hate the 1st half. maybe because I've read all the novels. 2) TLJ - loved this. 3) TFA (mostly because, when I think about it, it didn't feel like a new story. just new characters.) 4) Rebels - solid. 5) Solo - agreed. Haven't seen Resistance.

Found a pretty nice universal remote to replace our Apple TV remote. But, itโs not quite perfect. Biggest hurdle is figuring out if itโs possible to program the volume buttons to control the HomePod volume while itโs set as the audio output.

I would assume sending volume up/down to the Apple TV would flow through to the connected audio device. Does it not work that way?
It almost certainly would work that way, but Iโm not sure the Apple TV has IR codes for volume up and down. I attempted to โlearnโ them from the Siri remote, but it seems to be sending the volume button presses over the network or Bluetooth.

Only pig-headed stubbornness has kept Apple from coming up with a new one themselves, at this point.
Agreed, hence the market opportunity! Huge install base to sell into that likely enjoys the overall Apple TV experience, but hates the remote.
Connect an XBox or PlayStation controller. I find it far better than the official remote.
Hard to be worse! Iโll take a look at those on Amazon and see if they fit me :)
@cleverdevil Yes, please. Iโve resorted to using my phone for all of my Apple TVs because I hate that remote so much.
My only complaint is that I canโt control my TV volume with the remote on the phone...
Zak, Oct 31 2019 on micro.blog
@cleverdevil I long for this - as long as it has the voice control feature. Voice control on the current ATV remote is the only thing that makes it tolerable.
The problem with the Apple TV remote isnโt โtoo few buttons,โ itโs the fiddly touch surface. I want a total replacement :)
@cleverdevil we used the Logitech Harmony remote with the 2nd generation Apple TV. When we upgraded to the 4th generation, our habits didnโt change. Itโs like using the old style remote (infrared). Only for games does the new remote see use.

In spite of the AirPods Pro announcement, I am still very happy I went with Bose 700s. $249 is a lot for tiny earbuds that are easy to lose, especially if the battery degrades as quickly as the standard AirPods.

@cleverdevil That is a totally sensible way to look at it. Also, no one yet knows if the AirPods Pro are any good. At least you know Boseโs track record (both good and bad regarding their sound and noise cancellation profiles), and they had several professional reviews published by their release date.
@mjdescy precisely! I get that theyโre in different categories, as the AirPods Pro are earbuds and the Bose 700s are over-ear, but theyโre in a similar price category.
@cleverdevil Just like the original MacBook Air. I wouldn't be surprised if the price of AirPods gradually decreased, especially with the "lower end" model.
@simonwoods I am skeptical, but its certainly possible. I would happily pay $99 to replace my AirPods every few years. But, $249? Not a chance.
@cleverdevil Right but your AirPods didn't cost $249. Don't get me wrong, $159 is still a lot of money but the difference between the two prices is significant.
The AirPods were easily the best piece of hardware I have bought since the iPhone 5S and had a big part to play in convcincing me that Apple were worth giving a shot for going all-in. From the broader POV I think they could use the AirPods + Watch combination as the modern day equivalent of the iPod from 15 years ago.
@simonwoods absolutely! I still think $159 is too much, especially since they donโt include the wireless charging case at that price point. Sweet spot for me would be $99, including the wireless charging case, and I think Iโd grudgingly bite at $129.
@simonwoods also, Iโve been far less impressed with the AirPods than most people, I think. I find them far too fiddly to connect/re-connect to multiple devices, and the sound quality is pretty poor.
@cleverdevil They should definitely improve both of those areas over time; gradual iteration, etc. Like you I want them to tighten up the performance with regard to connection and battery life. For me the convenience of wireless is pretty big so the impact of the flaws is lessened somewhat; I've also dropped them a few times and they're tough little things.
@simonwoods totally fair! Overall, I think theyโre a great product, and clearly ahead of all of the competition. If there is one thing Apple absolutely crushes, its iterative improvement. Iโll revisit AirPods next year, probably, when my aging generation one set dies. Hopefully they have a $99/$129 option by then :)
@cleverdevil Same. :) I honestly think they can't mess around with this product in particular; unlike computers and phones, there isn't likely to be a market in uh... second-hand options (๐). As such they ought to do what they have done with the Watch with regard to upgrades and the like.
@cleverdevil Iโve always choked on the size of good sound-cancelling headphones like Bose, but you're right that they're harder to lose. I haven't lost my Bose sound-isolating earbuds yet, though.
