In a release of preliminary data from a forthcoming report, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) revealed that 20 veterans a day die from suicide. This includes data from all 50 states as well as US Territories, and is the largest veteran data set released to date. The release reveals that from 2001-2014 there was an 8.8% increase in suicide among veterans accessing care through the Veteran's Health Administration (VHA) whereas there was a 38.6% percent increase in suicide among veterans not accessing care from the VHA.

New CDC report demonstrates incremental increases of the U.S. suicide
rate over a 15 year period. These data underscore why suicide prevention must
remain a national public health priority. While more is being done now than
ever before to prevent suicides in the United States, greater efforts must
occur to reverse this disturbing trend in a preventable cause of death.
