Open Studio: Colorful Abstractions inspired by artist Angel Otero

This is a Super Special Extra OPEN STUDIO in conjunction with the Game City Showcase from 6-8PM.
Use oil pastels to create COLORFUL ABSTRACTIONS inspired by the oil-skin paintings of Angel Otero.
Please arrive early as parking may be particularly difficult due to Super Bowl activities in the area!

Performance: Musiqa Presents "Everything and Nothing"
Thursday, February 9 | 6:30PM
Musiqa presents a special concert inspired by the exhibition Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing in the Brown Foundation Gallery. In honor of Otero’s Puerto Rican heritage, the program features music by contemporary Hispanic composers including Carlos Carillo-Cotto, Alfonso Fuentes, William Ortiz-Alvarado, and Roberto Sierra along with Musiqa composer Marcus Maroney. The performers include Natalie Hoe and John Walters, clarinet, Max Geissler, cello, and Brandon Bell, percussion.

20HERTZ: Jawwaad Taylor

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is pleased to present a lecture and performance by Jawwaad Taylor, Houston-based multi-disciplinary musician and educator, in conjunction with CAMH’s music-based lecture series 20HERTZ. Taylor will discuss a variety of topics, including his inspirations, musical projects, and connections between visual arts and musical practices. The performance will include his unique approach of electronic music and live trumpet.

GALLERY TALK: ART AT NOON with Rex Koontz

Join Rex Koontz, Director of the School of Art, University of Houston, and Natilee Harren, Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art and Critical Studies, University of Houston for a discussion on the work of artist Angel Otero, exploring the questions: Is Angel Otero a Global Contemporary Artist or a Latin American Artist? Does it matter? Light lunch provided.

Panel: Performance as Praxis: A Discussion with the Artists of Experimental Action

Gallery Talk: Terry R. Myers

Join writer, curator, and professor Terry R. Myers for a walk-through of Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing. Myers will discuss his first-hand experience witnessing Otero’s artistic development as a graduate student and will explore the work more closely through the larger context of contemporary painting.

Come by CAMH to explore our two exhibitions on view: Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing and Origins of the Self, curated by our Teen Council. Venture through the museum using our exploratory ART GUIDE, which encourages looking closely, drawing, and writing. We’ll also be experimenting with the world of FABRIC ARTS.

Celebrate the opening of Atlas, Plural, Monumental, Paul Ramirez Jonas’s first survey exhibition in the Americas. Including sculptures, photographs, videos, drawings, and participatory works made from 1991 to 2016, Atlas, Plural, Monumental demonstrates how Ramirez Jonas is redefining “public art” by investigating how a public is constituted as well as what brings community members together. Many pieces in the exhibition invite viewers to participate and activate the work.
