Some may argue that it is not the right time of year to tackle this theme with all over the top festivities going on in the eve of forthcoming holidays, but I hope that you will still humour me and show minimalism in photography. If you don’t feel like participating in this challenge, just to remind you that we still have one more Thursday’s Special before the close of the year, next Thursday with the theme: 2016 Retrospective🙂
P.S. This is the last post this week. I can’t seem to find time to post and to view my favourite blogs, so I will take a blog break till next Thursday (22 December). See Scheduled challenges for updates.
The theme of today’s black and white photo challenge is artificial light. You have a week to respond.
Keep it burning
I will be very busy next week, so there will be no challenges, and I will not be challenging you on Christmas or New Year’s Day which means that the next Black and White Sunday is in 2017.
What is conceptual photography? It is photography of a concept i.e. idea, idea that is illustrated and conveyed through a photograph.
It is more about the message of a photo than about what is in the photo. Some artists intend to be clear in their messages, in illustration of their ideas, and some do not care if they will be understood or misinterpreted.
You have seen conceptual photography in advertising, in social critique, in political messages, but it is also used in contemporary conceptual art.
You may take different approaches to this challenge:
You may first come up with an idea that you want to illustrate, create a scene using some universally known objects that may act as symbols such as eggs, ping pong balls, chess figures, matchsticks and such. It does not have to be a complicated image composed of several shots to create a surreal setting, and you don’t need to manipulate reality using Photoshop like some famous conceptual photographers. You can keep things fairly simple to achieve an effective result – transmitting a message.
Alternatively, you may offer a photograph of a scene that you stumbled upon outside the house that you feel conveys a strong message. And the third approach would be to simply photograph a piece of conceptual art that you captured with your lens in which case you would act as an intermediary in the transmission of a concept.
(My idea for this challenge was to give you a theme that you might do at home, and maybe for some of you the first push to venture into the field of photography that you haven’t done before).
What inspired me to buy a bag of gummy bears and to arrange them by colour were parliamentarian elections in the country – the tight race between two main parties – the left wing and the right wing, each of them pulling in opposite direction and watching only their own interests.
Segregation

Traces of the Past is a recurrent photo challenge theme on this blog. It runs monthly, one month in colour, the other in B&W. This month it is time for the Black and White Traces of the Past.
I love my town, and the view bellow is very dear to me, despite the efforts of modern architects to ruin it. Traces of the past are still there, and it is comforting to look at them. The world we live in keeps changing, and some of these changes are a step in a wrong direction. In my images I will try to focus on nice aspects of this place without cloning out what is already there, whether a part of the good or not so good past.
I would appreciate if you could join me for another Black and White Sunday. There is only one more B&W Sunday before the end of the year, and it will be next Sunday. The 18th December I am taking a day off and the Sundays after that fall on Christmas and the New Year.
I am planning on continuing with this challenge in 2017 too, but there are still three more Thursday’s Specials this year to look forward to. I will be posting the news on Scheduled challenges page.
If you want to participate, please:
make a B&W photo post on today’s theme before next Sunday, 11 December
link it to this challenge post and tag it #blackandwhitesunday
leave a comment under this post (pingbacks are not comments)
Here we have again the recurrent photo challenge theme: Pick a Word. As usual you have a possibility to choose between five different words, or do several or even all together (in one post). Here are my five examples for:
aquatic
protrusion
echo
amiable
libation
I hope that this challenge has just the right amount of “challenging” for you and that you’ll enjoy it in 2017 too.
How many of you like to run outside at the sight of the first snow just to feel the flakes on your nose or you are like me and turn on the stove instead to make some greasy, creamy dough?
This time of year wouldn’t be what it is without the first snow or some scrumptious comfort food…
Today we are having everyone’s favourite theme: landscape. The only trick is that it has to be in black and white. My memories have taken me to Poland, this time on the shores of lake Czorsztyn.
A path, a meadow, some trees, and an old castle hanging above a lake; what more should a landscape have?
Today’s theme is pretty clear though the light in the image is dim. This twilight, half-obscure shot was taken one October above Florence. These days too as we approach the winter solstice, the half-lit sky is the only sky I see coming home from work.
If you want to join me in this Thursday’s Special photo challenge:
make a post on today’s theme and publish it before next Thursday
