Tips & Tricks Tuesday: View your tasks on your calendar for a new perspective

Looking at your task lists can help you see everything you have going on, but what about a new perspective? This week’s tip comes from someone who suggests using your calendar to see your tasks in a new way.

Remember The Milk allows you to export tasks as a calendar feed (it’s detailed here). Popping your tasks out of a list and into a calendar is a great way to get a different perspective on your work. If you see a day with a ton of items, it might be a good idea to spread things out. The calendar view is a useful way to see your tasks in a different light.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Jazz up your tasks with emoji

Posted Jan 16th, 2024

image

Using emojis in your task list may seem unexpected, but as countdiso says it can make things more fun and also stand out. Form and function?!

When I look at Remember The Milk and browse my lists, I have lists such as Books, Films, Music, where I make a task of a film I want to see or a book I’d like to read.

But, on my list I make it a bit funky by using emojis.

Books 📘
Films 📽️
Music 🎵

It helps make RTM a bit more colourful, fun and the emojis help things stand out.

Adding emojis on a phone is usually an easy task, but on a computer it isn’t quite as easy, but you can simply head over to Emojipedia.org and search for a suitable emoji, copy and paste it and make your lists look fancy.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Using your lists to find and to keep work/life balance

The past few years have upended all kinds of ways we organize our work and home lives. (And even that may be an understatement!) So we appreciated this tip from stevenov that offers a simple and perennial reminder to organize your tasks in a way that helps strike the balance between work and home.

Just a reminder about the beauty of lists! With so many working from home, it’s easy for your work projects and personal ones to blend together. Lists are an easy way to keep everything separated. Create a work list, so when you’re working, you only see work stuff. Use a personal list, so when you’re done, you only see everything else. Switching from one to the other is also a good way to signify the beginning and the end of the work day.

It’s more of a mental tip, but an important one.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Juggling financial tasks of all denominations

Posted Dec 19th, 2023

Keeping up with finances is important—and sometimes urgent too. Juggling everything can seem like its own job.

This week’s tip comes from alan.porter, who shows how to keep up with the day-to-day, month-to-month, and periodic things to keep your finances humming along.

I use RTM for lots of things: personal items, yearly goals, lists of books to read and movies to watch. But my biggest motivation for using RTM is for staying on top of bills. It easily handles the various schedules on which recurring bills come due.

So I have a list called “bills”, which my wife and I share. It contains monthly bills like credit cards, annual bills like property tax and insurance, and also some reminders to do some financial hygiene like balancing checkbooks and downloading statements.

To separate the different kind of financial tasks, I created three tags (with different colors): pay.manual, pay.auto and pay.none.

Pay.manual is for bills that we have to pay ourselves (not auto-drafted). It requires manual action from us to initiate it.

Pay.auto is for bills that are auto-drafted from our bank, so we don’t actually need to DO anything, except maybe check on it later.

Pay.none is for tasks like balancing the checkbook or downloading statements, which need to be done from time to time, but that can slide a few days without penalty.

With these tags, my wife and I can tell at a glance whether the time-critical stuff needs immediate attention. And when we get a rainy Sunday, we can take care of all of those other cleanup items.

Thanks for sharing this tip, alan.porter! You’re our Tips & Tricks Tuesday winner this week.
