The 3rd graders have been learning about primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary (orange, purple, green) colors. Students start out by drawing a chameleon and labeling the chameleon's body in color wheel order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
3rd graders only use the primary color and mix to make secondary colors
.
The students color the background with colored pencils or crayons

The 8th graders have finished their skeletons and some are on display for conferences!
The 8th graders examined the 4th grade skeletons and created a "grown up" version of the skeleton on their side. They took certain shapes, colors and designs and repeated them on their skeleton.
So Awesome!

Click here for more photos and info about the 4th graders making skeletons.

Animal Mosaics

I didn't teach this lesson last year so I thought I would bust it out! The 4th graders learn about mosaics and the artist Winold Reiss, who makes gigantic mosaic murals. Instead of using glass, we use magazine paper. It's a lot less dangerous and expensive!
I tear out the paper and separate it based on color. This is a lot easier than having the students search through the magazines themselves (it usually ends in the students trying to read the magazine!)

Students need to:
• Overlap their paper
• Cut pieces smaller than a quarter
• Leave no black paper inside the animal
• Follow the shape of their animal
