A ballot summary in California is a "a concise summary of the general meaning and effect" of a statewide California ballot proposition.

According to Section 9085 of the California Elections Code:

The state's official ballot pamphlets must contain the summary statement.
The summary statements are to be prepared by the California Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO)
The statements are not intended to provide comprehensive information.
The LAO is "solely responsible for determining the contents of these statements."
