Ballot summary (California)

A ballot summary in California is a "a concise summary of the general meaning and effect" of a statewide California ballot proposition.

According to Section 9085 of the California Elections Code:

  • The state's official ballot pamphlets must contain the summary statement.
  • The summary statements are to be prepared by the California Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO)
  • The statements are not intended to provide comprehensive information.
  • The LAO is "solely responsible for determining the contents of these statements."
