There's so much more to the Academy than first meets the eye. As one of the top natural and environmental science research institutions in the country, the Academy is home to dozens of scientists who work every day to discover new species, pioneer new research techniques, and monitor the health of our environment. Our renowned collections contain more than 18 million specimens, including such treasures as John James Audubon's birds and Lewis and Clark's plant collection. The Academy's Library and Archives are internationally recognized for their extraordinarily rare and historic collections, with more than 250,000 volumes from the 1500s to the present.
