Tortuga Del Coronado

“An ancient turtle monster rises from the ocean…”

The animated shots are traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, but instead of the traditional painted cel look, each frame was individually painted to describe form in a naturalistic style. This was done digitally using TVPaint and composited onto live-action background footage in Aftereffects; all on my Surface Pro 3.

Enjoy!

Animating on my Nintendo 3DS!

Over the Thanksgiving break I started playing with the new Nintendo 3DS app, “Butterfly: Inchworm Animation 2,” which is the “sequel” to the DSi animation app I had fun with a few years ago (See here and here).

It’s pretty amazing what this new app can do, even with the limitations of the 3DS.  The overall drawing/image creation tools are pretty good. You can customize brushes and save out your favorite settings. There’s the ability to record video and now audio, and there’s a library of sound effects you can use as well.

Currently there’s only enough memory for 100 drawings, but there’s a multi-layer timeline with key commands that allow you to tweak the timing, hold images, loop a range, and repeat drawings.  It kind of reminded me of how the Etch-a-Sketch Animator (the animation toy from 1986) only had 12 drawings you could make but if you were clever with the re-timing and ordering you could make it seem like it had more.  I didn’t really mind the image limit… it reminded me of writing an efficient tweet. :)

Not sure if I’ll continue using this app because of the scope of the projects I have brewing in my head, but it was nice to do simple and short animation that doesn’t take a year to complete.  After all, the original goal of this blog was to animate more frequently.  Perhaps I’ll do a mix of animation with “higher end”  renders using TV Paint, and quick “tweet” animation with the 3DS.  :)

For an app costing only $5, I definitely recommend it for kids or students wanting to practice animation.

WDAS Animation Dept Mannequin Challenge

A thing we did :)

A majority of the character animators at the studio are in this video if you’re curious to see the people who animated on our latest feature, Moana.

Moana’s out in theaters today!

After animation wrapped on Big Hero, I had the opportunity to help out with design on Moana.  One of my assignments was to design the village kids from her island of Motunui.  I hoped to bring a sense of authenticity to how they looked, and to make them real for me I thought a lot about watching my little cousins grow up back in the Philippines=).

Bobby Pontillas… So good!

I was sitting next to my good friend Wayne Unten (Supervising animator for Elsa)(animatingforfun.com) and we thought it would be fun to do a drawing for each other! So I drew Moana, and Wayne drew Elsa! ❄️🌴Tomorrow Moana joins the disney family officially! #Moana #Elsa (at Walt Disney Animation Studios)

My friend Malcon Pierce (Supervising Animator of Moana) and I played drawing-tag today. :)

Last night at the wrap party for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana.

This film is so special and means so much to me. I can’t wait for my family in Hawaii to see it. I get emotional just thinking about it. It’s so good! :)

All images are done!!!

Over the weekend I finished hand painting each drawing for shot 1, which concludes all animation!  I also finished the composite with the live-action BG plate for the monster’s first appearance.  It turned out really good that I wish I could redo parts of shot 4, but I’ll let it be. :)

I’m currently tweaking the audio and experimenting with the sound FX.  I love this part of the process… All the elements are coming together to bring the imagery to life!

Last night being Halloween, it was the perfect night to record some impromptu outdoor screams without people calling the police. :)

And speaking of sound… I want to give a shout out to my friend Dave Gottlieb, who composed an awesome monster score for this 27 sec short.  Here’s a view into his workstation:

Shot 1 Work-in-progress- Tie-down animation and Color Key done!

This week my evenings weren’t as busy, so it was nice to get things done on the shot. :)

A few people asked about my process so below I have images of the shot progression up to this point…

Shot 4- Color Done!!!

Finished painting each drawing of the turtle last week.  Pretty happy how it turned out. :)  I painted it with the live-action BG plate turned on so I could have the values match nicely.  All of the drawing, painting, tracking to the live-action BG plate, and comping was done using TV Paint on my Surface Pro 3.

Fun fact: When comparing the line version, you’ll see I added more parallax to the tail in the painted version near the end, just to clarify that it’s a tail, and not something else.  :)

The movie file looses quality when uploading to Tumblr, so here’s some stills of a few frames from shot 4:

“From Coraline to Kubo: A Magical Laika Experience”

Open to the public, August 5-28, 2016
Universal Studios Hollywood

Reshuffled my hours at work yesterday to check out this exhibit through ASIFA, which also dubbed as a Kubo and the Two Strings press event. I was shocked to see there was no glass between the guests and puppets! You could get right up in there to see the amazing craftsmanship. Part of the event was an early screening of Kubo, which was fantastic! Got to meet Travis Knight, and congratulated him on the beautiful film.

EDIT: Check out Shannon Tindle’s blog for some great behind-the-scenes of Kubo… shannontindle-blog.tumblr.com

Was flipping through a D23 magazine featuring Walt Disney Animation Studios and saw this photo! Apparently there were ninjas with cameras in the room when I was showing my early Snowgie test animation. :)

Next to the ninja photo is one of my favorite quotes from the article.

What to do when working late hours on Moana?  Wagon rides in the Tujunga warehouse of course!

Gave my buddy Malcon a ride last week, and my kids a ride yesterday…
