The heartbeat of First Draft Taproom & Kitchen is Bruin Business 100 honoree, Kevin Slattery ’77. Located in Downtown Los Angeles, First Draft was established to unite beer, cider and wine enthusiasts, and has become the ultimate gathering spot for Bruins on game day.

Kevin shared, “Since becoming part of the Bruin Business 100, we've been able to more effectively market @firstdraftdtla as a dedicated Bruin business, willing and able to help the Bruin communities in Southern California and Colorado to the fullest extent possible. This has included offering more Bruin Watch parties for various sports (now including women's basketball), hosting the new student send-off party in Colorado, hosting new Big Ten game watch parties for Bruin football, and hosting various other Bruin support activities in Los Angeles. We proudly display or framed Bruin 100 certificates at both our locations, promoting other Bruin attendees to events as often as possible.”

As alumni and supporters of UCLA, your voice is crucial in urging Congress to support biomedical research at our institution and across the country.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the single largest funder of research at UCLA and the University of California system. Our UC campuses compete nationally to conduct NIH research on behalf of the country, to find cures and develop therapies for diseases and other health afflictions.

On February 7th, the NIH announced an abrupt and unprecedented cut to funding for biomedical research. If allowed to continue, this cut will be crippling to the biomedical research efforts at UCLA and all the UC campuses. The proposed cut will the result in significant setbacks to our pursuit of science and our nation’s leadership in biomedical innovation.

As former President of ECMC Foundation, he led over $130 million in investments to improve college and career success for underserved students.

Reese Hoskin made history as the first African American administrator in his district, leaving behind a lasting legacy. Following in his legacy of support, Derek Hoskin (Bruin story since ’15) has committed to play a pivotal role in mentoring future Bruin leaders toward education and career success. His involvement in UCLA's Sharpe Fellows Program, the Anderson Riordan Program, and the AAP Alumni Network exemplifies this commitment. Through his mentorship support, Derek is ensuring that students like Alejandro Pullom (Bruin story since ’25) continue to break barriers and achieve success.

With Derek’s mentorship and guidance, Alejandro is starting his barrier-breaking career at a leading investment bank as a first-generation professional. Alejandro continues the story of support by paying it forward through his dedication and participation in the AAP Alumni Network, where he is scheduled to speak on a panel about professional journeys alongside other Bruins.
