In February, Mahmoud Shaalan, a Palestinian-American teenager from Florida, was shot by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the occupied Palestinian territory. The circumstances surrounding his death have remained ambiguous, and Mahmoud is just one of dozens of Palestinians killed by the Israeli military in recent months. Take action today to urge President Obama to investigate Mahmoud's case.
To contact Congress, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, and ask to be connected to your representative. Adapt the script below to communicate your concern: “Hello, my name is ______ and I live in ______.   As your constituent, I urge you to end the federal immigration detention quota that requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement maintain 34,000 immigration detention beds every day.
Did you know that Congress requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to maintain 34,000 spaces in immigration detention centers every single day?  This arbitrary mandate drives detentions that separate families, undermines the right to freedom, and, in some locations, subjects people to deplorable conditions that violate human rights standards and have even led to immigrants dying in detention. And it must end.  Join us in calling on Congress to end the detention quota and support inclusive policies that respect the dignity and rights of all people.
Every year, the U.S. imprisons nearly half a million immigrants in detention centers across the country for weeks, months, even years. This mass detention is fueled by an inhumane federal policy known as the “detention quota,” which requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to maintain 34,000 spaces for immigrant detention every single day. You can take action to stop the detention quota. Sign up today to join our Week of Action from Aug. 22-26.
After hearing from constituents, 20 members of Congress signed a letter to President Obama, urging him to appoint a special envoy for Palestinian children's rights.
