    walk in coolers typically have at least 10inch thick walls AND ceilings. Making walls much thicker than regular building walls. Which is why they can be safer in extreme situations.

    Obviously, everyone should have a Weather radio and a plan in place for severe wx.This is for those who are caught off guard & are down to very little options. Also, if one is already caught in a gas station during a tornado, that's the safest place in the building, not windows

    I’m not sure this is sound advice. I don’t see why a cooler would be constructed with anything sturdier than the building. May have been a case like the people surviving under the overpass. Extremely lucky and ultimately a horrible idea that becomes folklore. And wrong.

    Similar outcome in Hesston in 1990. Several took shelter in a Pizza Hut walk-in freezer and survived that monster that tore through town and hit the restaurant

    Yes and many fast food rest have large freezers. Seen folks in TX take shelter in a McDonald's once.

    If you're ever in a tight spot with a tornado bearing down on you...head inside a gas station, then go inside the coolers/freezers. I watched/filmed about 20 people walk out of one, unscathed, in Greensburg KS, when the EF-5 wiped the town outin 2007.
