71 entries in 13 days! That's pretty good!

I'd like to thank Andrew from Spittoon and Spittoon Extra for letting me host this month. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In April when I won one of the DMBLGIT awards for the first time, I never would have thought I'd be judging a few months later alongside such amazing food bloggers as Béa (La Tartine Gourmande), Sabra (Cookbook Catchall), Matt (wrightfood), Kate (Aapplemint), and Hannah (BitterSweet)! Thank you all for helping me this month put on a great event. Thanks too for participating this month and congratulations to the winners!

Part 1 - Overall Winners: The overall winners have the highest scores in all three categories combined.

Overall First Place: Feuille d' automne by Thip from Bonbini! with a Nikon D70We loved the unusual camera angle that shows off what must be a very complex but delicious dessert. Both the green mint leaves and the hazelnuts give a nice contrast and texture to the shot. Very well composed.

Overall Second Place: Vanilla Buttermilk Cake with Chocolate Fudge Frosting by Eliza from notes from my food diary with a Nikon D300, 60mm lens

A delicious looking cake that makes you wish you had that missing piece on a plate in front of you. Cutting the perfect piece and being able to photograph it afterwards is near impossible, but not for Eliza. The blue and green in the background adds that hit of color the photograph needs.

Overall Third Place: Chocolate and Caramel Mousse Cake by Helen from Tartelette with a Canon Rebel XTI

A fundamental accessory, the fork, is there, but in outline making this photo eye catching. A variety of shapes makes it interesting, and the hint of red from the currants adds appeal.

Part 2 - Edibility, Originality, and Aesthetics Category: Each photo was scored in three categories: edibility, originality, and aesthetics. The photo receiving the highest total score in each of those categories, excluding the three overall winners, is the specific category winner.

Winner Edibility Category: Cedar plank salmon with an Asian twist by Karine from Le Carrefour with a Canon 5D with 50mm f1/4 + extension tube

This salmon glistens in the soft light reflecting the pretty color of the flesh and the crunchiness of the outside. The subtle use of the Asian plate is a nice touch too.

Winner Originality Category: Chinese Tea Eggs - 茶叶蛋 cháyèdàn by Gisella from fiordisale with a Canon 400D

A lovely shot. The broken shells add texture sitting in that ceramic egg carton. Very original.

Winner Aesthetics Category: Banana Chocolate Flake Muffins by Sefa from Food is Love with a Canon EOS 400D ; Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Having the foreground muffin sitting in a little cup is really cute. The cup and half muffin on the left adds a lot to the composition and is in focus enough to be interesting, but out of focus enough so as not to distract from the foreground. Very aesthetically pleasing.

Host's Award: Lemon & Saffron Cheesecake by Marija from Palachinka with a Canon EOS 350D, Zoom Lens EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

Great lighting, sharp photo and great composition. Elevating the piece out of the tart gives the photo some interest. This tart looks luscious.

DMBLGIT September 2008 Edition

So if you haven’t submitted your best picture yet, there's still time to do so.

Andrew, who keeps busy with his three blogs (Spittoon, Spittoon Extra, and The Foodie List for UK foodies) and administering the Does My Blog Look Good In This? in his spare time cried out for help with the DMBLGIT for the upcoming months. I sent off an innocent email offering to help host, and here it is, in my lap, with less than 2 weeks left this month!

DMBLGIT is a monthly food photography event, called by some as "the grandest foodporn event available" on the web. Check out the amazing winners from last month at Andreea's blog On (Glorious) Food and Wine. Here are a few other tidbits I've discovered:

- In 2005, Ronald from love Sicily came up with the idea of a food blogging event focused on food photography while on a train from Southampton to London. This was the beginning of DMBLGIT. Now, it's administered via Is My Blog Burning? (IMBB).

- Matt from Matt Bites designed those amazing badges (and will be appearing on Martha: The Martha Stewart Show today, Sept. 17, 2008). Helen from Grab Your Fork was influential in this initiative as well.

Judging
Photographs are reviewed by a panel of judges, who score them in three categories: edibility, aesthetics, and originality. The host then compiles the scores to determine the winners. The specific things the judges will be looking for are as follows:

- Aesthetics: composition, food styling, lighting, focus, etc.
- Edibility: “does the photo make us want to dive in and eat the food?”
- Originality: the photograph that catches our attention and makes us want to say “wow!”, displaying something we might not have seen before.
- Overall Winner: top overall scores in all three categories combined.

There are three overall winners for photographs with the highest point totals in all three categories combined, and one winner in each of the three individual categories.

Rules
- Only one entry per person (a single photograph, no diptychs)
- The photograph must have been taken by you.
- The photograph must have appeared on your blog during the month of August.
- Entries must be received by September 30, 2008 at midnight EST (U.S.)

What do you have to do to join the event?
Send your entry to whiskfoodblog {at} gmail (dot) com with DMBLGIT as the subject. Please include the following:
- your name
- your blog’s name and URL
- your photograph’s title
- the URL of the post containing the photograph
- type of camera used, lens if you wish
- Please send photos in an attachment to your email in a jpeg format, of no more than 500 pixels in width

All submissions will be posted to the September 2008 DMBLGIT gallery, which will be updated as I receive entries. Please give me a few days to update the gallery with your submission! And make sure yours is included once I start publishing them.
