What’s New With You- A December Update

What's New With You

I seriously can’t believe that 2018 is already over and 2019 has already commenced! It just doesn’t even seem possible that we’ve traveled around the sun once more and that the holidays have come and gone. December always seems like the busiest month because we’re always trying to do as much as possible in only 31 days before the year is up, along with Christmas parties and holiday memory making and everything else that goes along with the holidays. But overall we had a fantastic December that wasn’t too overly stressful and I can’t wait to share it! Of course I’m liking up with Kristen to find out what’s new with you!

It seemed like we’d been going out of town and doing so much since September so instead of trying to schedule a lot in December we opted to just try and stick around the house a little bit instead. The first weekend in December was right after our Christmas party with our friends so we decided to keep the rest of the weekend low key. We did some shopping but really just hung out at home in the playroom. Since the girls have become more mobile we’ve been spending so much of our time up there because it gives them the opportunity to move around and play with things without getting into too much trouble. And even better that they love it!

That next week was the Christmas party for my company. I wish that we could have had spouses/significant others come but since it was a lunch, they weren’t invited. Even though I wish that Chris could have been there, it was still a great time! I got to hang out with my coworkers, drink a little wine, take some pictures in the photo booth and enjoy the amazing views of Minute Maid Park! That’s right our party was where the Astros play! It was an amazing venue and we all had such a great time. Afterwards we all went out downtown and enjoyed spending some more time just hanging out. Chris was an all star dad and wrangled the girls by himself while I had some fun!

That weekend we ended up having another Christmas party to go to that was hosted by our neighbors. I didn’t take any pictures but we had such a fun time! The girls loved playing with all the other kids that came over and they especially loved chowing down on the lasagna for dinner. They enjoyed it so much that we made it for dinner that week with some spicy sausage and even though the girls would cry when they got something that was exceptionally spicy, they would drink milk and go back for more! It was the cutest thing!

One thing that I wanted to make sure that I did this year was to get some pictures of the girls in front of the tree. Chris and I were trying to get them to sit still which is almost nearly impossible now, and then one of us had the brilliant idea to turn them around to look at the tree and handed them the remote that turns the lights from white to colored to alternating to off. They sat there for a good 5 minutes while I got the most priceless pictures of them looking like they adore the Christmas tree! They really just loved pushing the button on the remote but I got my pictures!

Usually we’re not ones to try and do much during the week because it’s usually too hectic with the girls and their routine, but our friends suggested going to zoo lights on a Thursday night to beat the crowds and we happily agreed! I had been wanting to go to zoo lights for so long because it sounded so cool, so I was really excited to share the experience with the girls. We got there right when they opened so the sun was still partially up, but as soon as we got in to the zoo and settled it was dark enough for all the lights.

The girls got a wagon for their birthday that Chris completely decked out with lights and it was such a great addition for our trip! The girls loved being able to see all the lights and they could even eat their sandwich in the wagon without dropping food all over the place! It was seriously so much fun, even though there weren’t any animals out to see, and I know that we’ll be going back again next year!

We were very much in a mood to see Christmas lights that week because once the weekend rolled around we headed out for more Christmas activities around Houston. One of the local breweries- No Label had a big Christmas market with live bands that Saturday afternoon so after the girls naps we headed to the brewery and walked around for a bit and had a beer.

We had some time to kill before we needed to head closer into town for the lights so we decided to visit MKT Distillery that’s right next to the brewery. They had a vodka, whiskey and moonshine for us to try (I didn’t love the straight liquor tastings!) and then Chris and I got mixed drinks and hang out with the girls for a little bit. The location of the distillery is really cool because it’s located right in the middle of one of the old silos. We definitely will have to venture back!

We ended the night by driving in town to see the lights at Bayou Bend that’s put on by the Museum of Fine Arts. Basically it’s this big beautiful house that was donated by a philanthropist Ima Hogg that they add a ton of lights to on the outside and then you can walk around the inside of the house and hear a little Christmas story. The girls loved seeing all of the lights but they hated meeting Santa. We opted to do the traditional crying photo so we could show them how much they hated Santa back in the day. There were other activities scattered all over the grounds including snowball fights and sledding and old Christmas movie watching. We just did the sledding with the girls and they enjoyed it, and I know that they’ll enjoy the other activities once they get a little older. I can see this being an annual trip for us too!

Before I knew it it was the week before Christmas! One of my coworkers turned the big 3-0 on Christmas Eve so we decided to celebrate her and the start of the holidays with a champagne lunch at a place called A’bouzy. It was so much fun and I definitely want to go back for another visit!

We had one more Christmas thing to do in Houston before we headed to my parents house for Christmas and that was to head to Saint Arnold for some more Santa pictures and a picture with Saint Arnold too! We had taken the girls there last year to get their picture taken and I wanted to continue the tradition! We enjoyed a great meal out in the beer garden before heading inside for pictures. The girls were pretty freaked out again by Saint Arnold and Santa so we opted to just hold them and get a family picture instead, but Izzy still started crying.

After that we packed up and headed to College Station to kick off our Christmas! We had a great Christmas with family even if it was a bit crazy and chaotic chasing after the girls because they both decided to start walking! Addy had been walking for a week or so before hand and literally that weekend Izzy decided to start legit walking! It was fun to see them in action, but man did they keep me on my toes!

Besides celebrating with our extended family on Christmas Day, all of the women got together on Christmas Eve and finally divided up our wine from Napa. I’m not ashamed to say that I went home with the most wine at 17 bottles and they might have been the most expensive too…

The Wandering Weekenders- What's New With You- A December Recap

We ended up driving back home to Houston on Christmas which was definitely not fun because I had to work on the 26th. It was the start of close which meant that we were busy so thankfully that helped my one work day to go by super quickly because I was off through the New Year!

Like every other year, we were headed up to Dallas to spend the New Year with Chris’s family and also to do our Christmas celebration. We did some last minute shopping on Thursday before heading up to Dallas. Because we got there so much earlier than New Years Eve, we were also able to see some friends and family along with spending a lot of time with Chris’s brothers and their families and his parents. My cousin and also one of my good friends have had good babies this year, and I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet them, so I loved getting to finally see them and love on them!

After doing our “tour de Dallas” we spent the rest of our time just relaxing with family. The girls made out like bandits during their second family Christmas, and we loved getting to play How Do You Meme with the adults before celebrating the New Year!

Like I said before, it’s seriously unbelievable that it’s 2019! I’m very much looking forward to the coming year, and I’m hoping that it’ll be even better with more new experiences and fun with the girls! I’m also hoping to get back into blogging, and hopefully I’ll have the chance to get caught up on replying to comments as well!

So, what’s new with you? Did you have a good Christmas?

Book Challenge by Erin 10.0

I seriously can’t believe that it’s already time for another round of Erin’s Book Challenge, and I also can’t believe that this is the 10th challenge! Erin has a Facebook group where all the members post their lists and keep track of their reading status. It’s seriously so much fun, and zero pressure, and if you’re thinking of a way to read more in the new year, this is the perfect way to start!

The Wandering Weekenders- Book Challenge By Erin 10.0

General Rules

  • First and foremost, have fun. Don’t stress. No one is being judged, graded, or penalized. Even if you finish only one book the entire challenge, if you enjoy it and it’s an accomplishment for you, then that’s awesome.
  • The challenge will run from JANUARY 1, 2019 to APRIL 30, 2019. No books that are started before 12 a.m. on January 1 or finished after 11:59 p.m. on April 30 will count. (We live in different time zones – follow this according to your own time zone.)
  • Each book must be at least 200 pages long. Audio books are fine too.
  • A book can only be used for one category, and each category can only be completed once. If you want to switch the category of a book, or change the book you originally chose, no worries.
  • You can read your books in any order you choose.
  • Rereads can be used only once. If a book you love fits into a category, go ahead and visit it again. Read it in its entirety. But, only do this once for the challenge.
  • There will be a photo album for each category with links to books chosen. Please comment on the photo for each of your books when you finish reading them. A comment can include a review, a rating, a recommendation…other readers want to hear what you thought of your choice. (If you need help with this, let me know…or there is a file attached to our group explaining what to do.)
  • There will be 10 book categories with a possibility of earning 200 points. That’s 10 books in four months. For some of you, this will be a BIG challenge; for others it will be easy peasy. It’s all for fun, remember!
  • Book categories will be posted December 1st to give you time to gather books in preparation.
  • After the categories are posted, please post a preliminary list with books of your choice according to their categories on the facebook group page by December 15th (if possible). If you need help with a particular category or want a book suggestion, we as a community of reading enthusiasts can help each other. (Late entries will still be accepted.)
  • The first three people who finish the challenge will be invited to contribute a category for the next challenge. The following will get a small prize from me (1st to complete 1st round; 1st to complete both rounds; and WILD CARD random draw – all who finish the 10 book challenge will qualify as an entry!) Plus, everyone who completes the challenge will gets all sorts of recognition and support!
  • Lastly, have fun. Don’t stress. No one is being judged, graded, or penalized. Even if you finish only one book the entire challenge, if you enjoy it and it’s an accomplishment for you, then that’s awesome. Wait, I’ve read that somewhere before…Good luck!

Categories

  • 5 points: Freebie – Read a book that is at least 200 pages
Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (565 pages). I’ve been meaning to read more of this series since I started reading it like two challenges ago. This freebie seems like the perfect opportunity to read the next book! Hopefully I remember everything that happened!
  • 10 points (from BCBE 1.0; selected by Megan Kloustin): Read a book that was made into a movie
Still Alice by Lisa Genova (292 pages). This has been on my list for so long, but I know that I’ve put off reading it because I know that it’s going to be a sad book. I’m hoping that I love it as much as everybody else does!
  • 10 points (from BCBE 2.0; selected by Vinay R): Read a book that is set in Europe
I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella (448 pages, Netgalley). I love, love, LOVE Sophie Kinsella, and most of her books are set in England, so this book was an easy choice for me for this category. Plus it’s a Netgalley book so I can kill two birds with one stone.
  • 15 points (from BCBE 3.0; selected by Jamie Ghione): Read a book that was a Newberry Award winner (medal winner or honor book); this link should help: http://www.ala.org/…/newberymedal/newberyhonors/newberymedal ***for this category only, since many children’s literature books may be shorter, the page number requirement is only 100 pages
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (307 pages). Over the past year or two I’ve started to read a few Neil Gaiman books. While his writing can sometimes be hard to get through, his stories always captivate me. I figured that this would be a great choice for this category.
  • 20 points (from BCBE 4.0; selected by Deborah Dainton): Read a book that is a friend or family member’s favourite…or the favourite book by another participant in this challenge
Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson (289 pages). My mom and I always have similar tastes in books, which is why I went to her first for a recommendation for this category. Of course, the first book she selected was the book that I chose for BCBE 4.0, Same Kind of Different As Me, so I went with another book that she loved. I love James Patterson, so this will be an interesting new direction for him.
  • 20 points (from BCBE 5.0; selected by Donna Nevins): Read a book originally published over 100 years ago; this link should help: https://www.goodreads.com/…/16.Best_Books_of_the_19th_Centu…
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (251 pages). I’m pretty sure that this is only Jane Austen book that I haven’t read so I chose this book for this category because sometimes older books just take me a while to get through. It sucks because the book with a cardinal direction category was the one that I struggled with the most, and this would have fit perfectly in that category as well.
  • 25 points (from BCBE 6.0; selected by Beverly-Ann Basque): Read a book with six words (and only six words) in the title
The Girl He Used To Know by Tracey Garvis Graves (304 pages, Netgalley). I always try to read my Netgalley books for these challenges because I’m terribly behind on my book list from there, so as soon as I saw that this book fit in this category I chose it. It’s also by the same author that wrote The Island, which I loved, so I’m excited to read it!
  • 30 points (from BCBE 7.0; selected by Vanessa Loke): Read a book with a compass or cardinal direction in the title
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid (231 pages). Like I stated previously, this category was the hardest for me, and I definitely utilized what people had chosen in BCBE 7.0. This book got lots of good reviews, so I decided to give it a try!
  • 30 points (from BCBE 8.0; selected by Keli Hearron): Read a book that was originally published in a different language than your own
The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (278 pages). I’ve loved the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, so picking this one to finish up the series was an easy choice for me. It still amazes me how beautiful the books are in English, when they were originally written in Spanish!
  • 35 points: (from BCBE 9.0; selected by Amanda Forsyth): Read a book that begins with the letter “N”
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty (453 pages). Easiest choice ever, and I put my name on the list from the library as quickly as possible! I love Liane Moriarty, and I can’t wait to get my hands on her newest books! From what I hear it’s great, and I’m hoping it doesn’t disappoint like Truly Madly Guilty!

So there you go, my choices for Book Challenge by Erin 10.0! I hope that you decide to join in on the fun! It’s always a good time with fellow book lovers!

The Wandering Weekenders- Show Us Your Books- What I Read In February

How in the world is it already December and the end of 2019! I got on Goodreads to get the links for the post and I saw my Goodreads goal for the year and I’m officially 15 books behind, and Goodreads was nice enough to tell me that I could still meet my challenge with the 20 days left in the year. Sorry Goodreads, but I don’t think that it’s happening this year, although I did make a big push in November as far as books are concerned, and they were mostly good books too! Of course I’m linking up with Steph and Jana for some Show Us Your Books action because where else would I be on the second Tuesday of the month?

The Wandering Weekenders- Show Us Your Books What I Read In November

Named of the Dragon by Susanna Kearsley ★★★★ 4 stars

I always love how Susana Kearsley manages to mix legends and myths and history with a story that you’re going to love. When Lyn goes on a holiday with her favorite client she expects a week of relaxation. Instead she finds herself in the middle of a madwoman’s fantasies that actually seem quite real for Lyn.

Susana Kearsley always has a way to make me fall in love with a specific region of the U.K. and Named of the Dragon is no different. It was beautifully written and makes me want to learn more about Welsh history!

One Paris Summer by Denise Grover Swank ★★★★ 4 stars

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

While any normal teenage girl would be excited to spend a summer in Paris, Sophie isn’t exactly looking forward to the idea. Her father is getting remarried to a French woman with a daughter who is sure to make her life miserable. Plus she’s a promising piano student who would rather be practicing all summer so she can get a scholarship to attend music school. But then she meets Matthieu and suddenly all of her summer plans change.

What can I say, I really love a good teenage chick lit book! This book had the drama with an evil stepsister along with the drama of a young love all mixed within the beautiful city of Paris! It was a light and quick and easy read that had me continuing to turn the pages!

The Wandering Weekenders- Show Us Your Books What I Read In November

The Woman In The Window by A.J. Finn ★★★ 3 stars

Dr. Anna Fox is a recluse and spends most of her time self medicating with wine and pills and stalking her neighbors. So when a new couple and their son moves in next door she’s immediately drawn in and wants to know all about them. But sometimes you see things you don’t expect and when the wife is suddenly murdered, Anna freaks out and calls the police, the only problem is that a body can’t be found. Did she imagine the whole thing?

I’d give this more like 3.5 stars but it’s not good enough to round up to 4. I think that maybe I’m just over the whole unreliable narrator thing. It felt like it took me a while to get into the book because of the writing style and then I figured out a couple of the plot twists early on. It was entertaining just not my favorite thriller.

The Wandering Weekenders- Show Us Your Books What I Read In November

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid ★★★★★ 5 stars

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

In the mid 70s the band The Six were on their way to the top. They were almost done recording their first album and were about to go on tour when Daisy Jones, another artist on their record label but more known for her party girl attitude, was brought on to record a song with them. That song propelled them into fame and ultimately helped them to make the decision to include Daisy Jones in the band and record the next album with her. What happens after that is it what you would expect at all.

I honestly had no idea what this book was even about, but because it’s a TJR book, I had to request it as soon as I knew that it was out! I love that TJR is constantly trying new things with her books, not just in plots but also in formatting as well. I felt like Evelyn Hugo was completely different from anything else I’d read by her because it was about a movie star and her incredible life, while Daisy Jones is about a rock and roll band and their ride to the top. I also loved that this book was written in an interview style as well so you got to hear from everybody’s point of view, which also left me wanting to read more and more!

While I felt like this was very different than anything that TJR has written before, there was still a love story that was built into the storyline, which I loved as well. I can’t recommend this book enough. If you love TJR, definitely pick this one up, and if you’re looking for something a little bit different pick this one up!

So overall this was a really good reading month for me, especially since I think that I can honestly say that I read my favorite book of the year this month in Daisy Jones and The Six. It was seriously so good and you need to preorder it for when it comes out in March! It’s totally 1000% worth it!

What have you been reading lately? Do you have a favorite book of the year so far?
