HandBrake is a multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder. Supported sources: Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD, and some .VOB and .TS files, Blu-ray source, Most any multimedia file it can get libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode. Outputs: File format: MP4, MKV, Video: MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9 or Theora, Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (several audio tracks), Switchable or burned in subtitles and much more! Upgrade Notice
Before updating, please make sure there are no pending encodes in the Queue. If you are currently using HandBrake older than version 1.0.0, please also make note of any custom Presets you have created, as they may not be compatible with newer versions.

This software continues to be an app that could potentially be the best around yet under-delivers drastically.
It's open source software, that uses open source tools behind the scene yet there is no official Linux build other than via PPA which by definition limits it to Ubuntu based distros. Yes you can usually download it from your distros repos but I find it odd that the developers essentially endorse one distro over others. Why no .rpm? Why no .deb? Why no appimages, or Suse packages or just a generic Linux binary?
But it's more than that, they include QS support on Windows, but they only included the fast and medium presets, no "best" preset because of some silly explanation. They won't include QS supprt for Linux despite the fact that it's implemented using open source libraries. The won't include NVENC support for any platform, despite ffmpeg supporting it with an open source library.
It goes on, there's only an "advanced" configuration option for x264, not any other encoder and even that only exposes what the HB developers care about.
Yet here's the sad reality, let's assume they fixed all these issues, you still wouldn't want to use it for anything other than 4:2:0 8 bit encoding, because, in one of the dumbest things imaginable, they support 10 bit x264 encoding and 10/12 bit x265 encoding yet the internal video processing pipeline, by their own admission, is 4:2:0 8 bit! So if you have a 16 bit 4:4:4 source and choose x265 12 bit Intra, it will still convert it to 4:2:0 8 bit for processing before spiting it out as 12 bit!
Absolutely ridiculous, this software should be considered strictly for the amateur hobbyist that wants to convert his DVD's/BD's for playback on a tablet or similar device and that's it.

I use this to optimize the file sizes of my video collection. It's been really efficient & fast to encode and given good compression ratios.

Would some one please get rid of that stupid value for money option when a program is freeware! I fail to understand how some here manage to vote even 9/10 using value for money, did you knock off 1 point because you paid for it?It is free for Pete's sake! Last version of Handbrake patched 9.9.x is by far most stable, but you want to try out newer builds if using Win 10. Handbrake is vastly superior to its offshoot Vidcoder, which makes a mess of audio output and is far from stable. At least with Handbrake using a gain of 2 or 3 you can extract the audio with yamb, then check with aac gain, finally normalize removing any clipping incurred, Vidcoder's audio output is not recognisable.
