As a key member of the Group Life Actuarial Methodology and Development team, you will be responsible for leading the development of the stochastic Economic Scenarios Generator (ESG) to meet increased regulatory requirements under Swiss Solvency Test (SST) and Solvency II as well as for its ongoing development for use in MCEV internal capital model calculations. In this strategic role, you will have the chance to gain detailed first-hand insights into advanced ESG mathematical models, their implementation and their importance for valuing life insurance liabilities and economic value from a truly global perspective.

As a Senior Stochastic Economic Scenarios Expert your main responsibilities will include:

Lead the SST internal model development for the ESG and provide technical support for discussion with FINMA and other relevant stakeholders.

Understand and document highly technical details on mathematical theory, calibration approaches and numerical implementation of various stochastic models.

Analyse ESG tools, documentation and academic literature behind to retrieve necessary information which might not be readily available.

Develop ad-hoc analyses to support this with numerical evidence.

Validate adequacy of existing ESG methodology, parameterization, implementation and processes for Company-specific life insurance liability valuations under SST and Solvency II as well as for other market consistent economic valuation frameworks.

Identify gaps, assess anticipated materiality, suggest and implement remedial action.

Supporting overall ESG developments, quantitative testing and documentation on an ongoing basis for all Company market consistent valuations.

Managing relations with Company ESG tool provider, Company's business units and other internal stakeholders including the Independent Validation team.

Keeping abreast of latest industry developments and best practice on ESG in order to identify and implement future developments across the whole Group.

Communicate complex technical topics across the whole organization to both technical and non-technical audiences (eg senior management).

Requirements
5+ years of experience with ESG or other related topics, ideally working for an insurance Group or major insurance or financial consultancies.

Masters degree in maths/physics/finance/economics or similar. A PhD and/or actuarial qualification is a distinct advantage.

Comprehensive understanding of the mathematical theory behind a wide range of stochastic financial models and of their numerical implementation, calibration and usage (eg LMM+, TVDV, 2FVasiceck, etc.).

Detailed understanding of the interrelations between ESG and the market consistent valuation of life insurance liabilities.

Previous practical experience with Moody's Analytics (formerly Barrie & Hibbert's) ESG tools.

Previous experience supporting internal model approval processes in respect of ESG or similar purposes under SST or Solvency II is a distinctive advantage.

Expert in Excel and VBA. Other programming or statistical software are a plus as well as a strong capability of investigating new IT solutions to better meet business needs.

Fluent English and strong communication skills, both written and oral is a must.

Strong analytical skills, attention to the details, accuracy and commitment to quality.

Strong sense of responsibility, project management skills and adherence to deadlines.

Independence and ability to develop innovative solutions with a problem-solving and solution-oriented attitude.

Previous experience in managing a team of 1-2 people is a plus.

6933| University College London, Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Translational Imaging Group| Research Associate in Disease Progression Modelling| The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Neurodegenerative processes such as Alzheimer’s disease or multiple sclerosis cover a broad range of distinct conditions. The accurate diagnosis and treatment of these pathologies requires the development of accurate computational models of the complex pathophysiology of neurodegenerative processes. To this purpose, the development of computational and statistical quantitative models of disease progression is currently a primary research focus of many academic and industrial actors.

The project aims at combining statistical and image-processing techniques to model the pathological progression of neurological disorders in the brain of patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases. These models may combine several brain imaging modalities, and potentially investigate the complex interaction between brain changes and other clinical indices. Particular focus of the project will be in the modelling and simulation of clinically plausible evolution of biomarkers, represented by clinical and imaging data, by combining statistical/machine learning techniques with biomechanically/biophysically inspired dynamical models of brain changes. The candidate will rely on a number of methods developed within CMIC, and by the collaborators. The candidate will extend the current approaches in order to improve the modelling and prediction of neurodegeneration from clinical data, and to translate those discoveries into clinical practice.
Due to the challenging setting of the project, characterised by large-dimensional data and relatively low sample sizes, as well as high data heterogeneity, the candidate will need to demonstrate sufficient expertise into the development of robust and reliable methods which can be translated into the clinic. Knowledge in statistics and optimization techniques is a fundamental requirement, as well as programming proficiency.

This post is funded for 3 years in the first instance.

The successful candidate will have a Honours Degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or Computer Science and/or a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or in a relevant related area.
It is essential that applicants have experience in computer programming using C/C++, Python and Matlab. Experience in preparing statistical information, numerical optimization, be competent in medical image analysis and computer vision and have a demonstrable record of publications in peer-reviewed conference proceedings and scientific journals.

Addison Wheeler Fellows will be employed in the University on a non-renewable fixed-term contract. Seeking a talented in vitro scientist for a 6-month temporary contract to join the Secondary Pharmacology team in the Discovery Safety Department of the Drug Safety & Metabolism function. The key aim of the Secondary Pharmacology team is to enable project teams in the discovery phase, to detect and design out undesirable off-target pharmacological interactions in order to avoid potentially harmful side effects.

As a secondary Pharmacologist you will be accountable for designing and interpreting outsourced in vitro pharmacological profiling studies and able to connect with project team scientists to influence drug design and decisions in the discovery phase. In addition, bringing expertise in pharmacological principles, you will work with project teams to understand the molecular mechanisms driving in vivo pre-clinical and clinical effects, contributing to the risk assessment for patients and project progression.

This is an opportunity for a highly motivated scientist to work in a vibrant group at the leading edge of their field to support drug safety assessment, a critical component of the drug discovery and development process. The successful individual will participate in or lead new aspects of in vitro pharmacological profiling as part of on-going strategic development of selectivity screening. Understanding the translation of this in vitro data to pre-clinical and clinical effects is important and will direct the future strategy. This is a non-lab based role.

Secondary Pharmacologist responsibilities include:

  • Design and interpret in vitro pharmacological profiling data to influence project decision-making
  • Work in close collaboration with Discovery Safety Specialists, to set and answer critical project safety questions
  • Liaise with the Enabling Services Out-sourcing group to deliver outsourced in vitro pharmacological profiling studies to quality, time and cost

Education and Experience

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline (for example, pharmacology, biology, biochemistry, physiology) with an excellent track-record in driving innovative science.
  • Previous technical experience of in vitro pharmacological or biochemical assay development and screening (eg radioligand binding, enzyme activity and functional cell-based systems).
  • Experience of working in drug projects and a good understanding of the Drug Discovery and Development process is a benefit but not essential.
  • Knowledge of small molecule drug discovery and analytical molecular pharmacology skills.
  • Experience of integrative pharmacology/physiology in the drug discovery and development context would also be of benefit.

It involves five research groups at the University of Sheffield, Queen Mary University, London, and the University of Sussex performing research whose goal is biomimetic robot control and which will combine autonomous robotics, computational neuroscience, accelerated neural network simulations on GPU architectures and insect neuroscience and behaviour. In Sussex we are seeking to employ a team of three research fellows for initially 2 years, with possible extension up to 5 years in the first three of those areas.

RF 3 (ref 1390) in Computer Science, working on GPU accelerated simulation of brain models and brain-inspired robot controllers, building on our GeNN meta-compiler and the SpineCreator/SpineML API to GeNN.

The work will include developing methods for model- and hardware-aware GPU-accelerated simulations methods that will allow us to efficiently simulate both large-scale models in Computational Neuroscience on super-computers and bio-inspired robotic controllers on embedded systems GPU accelerators.

A successful candidate will have proven skills in complex software development with a focus on scientific computing.

All RFs will work together on the project within Sussex and in the larger Brains-On-Board team.

Our goal is to develop innovative genetic approaches for the control of vectors of human diseases such as Malaria or Zika or insect agricultural pests threatening food production. Our research involves the use of cutting-edge molecular biology and genetics to understand and ultimately control harmful insects and we often employ Drosophila as a testbed for particular concepts. One current focus is on the engineering of synthetic genetic elements causing sex-ratio distortion or exhibiting “gene drive” and hence allow to control insect populations. This involves the use of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing for the genetic manipulation of insects such as Anopheles gambiae, Aedes albopictus or Ceratitis capitata. The successful candidate will design synthetic DNA constructs and test their performance in transgenic insects. The role will involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research as the project is part of a wider collaborative network.

We seek a highly motivated individual to fill this post, in possession of a PhD (or equivalent) in Biology or a related subject and a high level of expertise and skills in molecular biology and genetics. Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures, and practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals are essential. Additionally, you must have demonstrable experience of working with fruit flies, mosquitoes or other insects. The ideal candidate will also have experience in CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing as well as familiarity with analysis of genomics data and proven experience of managing technical staff.

Currently, one of the phenomena that have a significant impact on the area of data processing technologies are Big Data. According to IDC forecasts, the amount of data in the world is doubling every two years, and by 2020 it will reach 44 Zettabytes, or 44 trillion of Gigabytes. At the same time modern database technology cannot provide the processing of such large amounts of data. According to IDC in 2013 only 22% of the existing data were potentially useful and less than 5% of it were analyzed. By 2020, the proportion of potentially useful data could grow up to 35%, mainly due to data from embedded systems.
The goal of this project is to develop new models, methods and algorithms to efficiently store, process and analyze large volumes of data using exaflop multiprocessor systems. Particular attention will be paid to the following areas:
- columnar data representation;
- in-memory data storage;
- distributed and parallel data processing;
- methods for scientific data processing;
- using many-core processors and cluster computing systems for Big Data processing;
- parallel methods and algorithms of data mining.
This project is implemented within the framework of a large interdisciplinary project “Smart Factory“. A Postdoctoral Training Fellow position is available to play a key role in facilitating the research of the Systems and Precision Cancer Medicine Team (Team Leader Anguraj Sadanandam). Our interdisciplinary lab focuses on personalized medicine and companion diagnostics using cancer subtypes and evolution by integrating multi-omics (molecular and metabolism) and phenomics (phenotypes) data. We perform this by integrating wet-lab science with computational biology skills by cross-comparing and integrating high-throughput data (including whole tumour and single cell omics data and cross-species analysis) between patients and in vivo and in vitro models. To this end, we have classified different tumor types including breast cancer cell lines, and pancreatic and colorectal tumours and cell lines into distinct molecular and/or drug response subtypes (PNAS 2012, Nature Medicine 2011, 2013 and 2015, and Cancer Discovery 2015). You will help us in an immunoncology project characterizing tumours from in vivo models and performing pre-clinical trials. You will enjoy working in the interdisciplinary fields and collaborating with our internal and external collaborators. You will be a highly motivated and well-organised individual with a great attention to detail and strong analytical skills and will also have experience in in vivo (genetically engineered/xenograft) models performing pre-clinical trials in cancer. Your responsibilities will include day-to-day laboratory operations such as cell culture, different molecular biology and biochemical techniques (including, but not limited to DNA, RNA and protein isolation, isolation, RT-PCR, Western blots, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, FISH and metabolite analysis) and in vitro and in vivo experiments and interpretation of the results. In addition, you will work closely with the team and other collaborators to develop and validate hypothesis that will arise out of the high-throughput omics data including genomics and metabolomics.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or any biological science. Experience in laboratory management, molecular biology and biochemical techniques, cell culture and in vivo experiments is essential as well as excellent organizational, scientific writing and communication skills. Experience in computational biology/bioinformatics would be advantageous.

This is an excellent opportunity for an independent and motivated individual to work in an exciting and highly collaborative environment. The position is offered on a fixed term 1 year contract. The full salary scale for this post is in the range from £29,960 to £42,820 p.a. inclusive. Starting salary will be based on previous postdoctoral experience. The position will be based in Sutton.

6931| UNICAMP, Institute of Biology| Postdoc position in Protein Malnutrition and Obesity| The Obesity and Comorbidities Research Center (OCRC) of the University of Campinas (Unicamp), São Paulo, Brazil, offers an opportunity of Postdoctoral fellowship on Experimental Research and Studies program related to the Developmental Origins of health and disease (DOHaD Concept), focusing on environmental factors (Nutrition) that impact on the development of obesity and insulin resistance in myocytes, hepatocytes, and especially in thyroid and pancreatic beta cells dysfunctions. The OCRC is one of the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers (CEPIDs) supported by FAPESP and the position is available for up to 24 months, starting in February 2017.
According to the worldwide increase of obesity and its associated metabolic complications, such as diabetes, we assess the impact of nutrient deficiency (amino acids), in the early stages of development, on the induction of obesity and diabetes. Reduced supply of proteins (amino acids) has several implications on long-term individual health. The literature data show that the nutrient restriction, especially in early stages of life, increases the risk to develop obesity and its associated comorbidities. Protein restriction leads to increased body adiposity and insulin resistance, and also causes pancreatic beta cells dysfunction, which increase the probability of diabetes development. However, the mechanisms involved in this metabolic reprogramming remain to be established. It is not known if the higher fat accumulation is due to the thrifty phenotype installation, which may exacerbate the expression of genes involved with the synthesis of energetic substrates or, on the other hand, if it could be associated with thyroid dysfunction, reducing body energy expenditure. Data from our research group also show that supplementation with the amino acid taurine reverses several effects induced by amino acid restriction, although the molecular mechanisms of its action are also unknown.
The candidate should be graduated in Nutrition and have a PhD in related field; experience in morphological analyzes such as immunofluorescence and confocal; cellular and molecular biology techniques with experience in studies of gene expression through Real-Time PCR and broad knowledge in endocrine physiology. It is also expected that the candidate has the ability to work with diets in experimental animal models in a multidisciplinary environment. It is mandatory prior experience of research in metabolic programming involving mainly the adaptive responses of the thyroid.
The project will be conducted in the Endocrine Pancreas and Metabolism Laboratory at the Obesity and Comorbidities Research Center (OCRC), Institute of Biology, Unicamp, under the supervision of Dr. Everardo Magalhães Carneiro, funded by OCRC with full access to University facilities. The aim of the project is to characterize the properties of neural interfaces in implanted electrodes systems. The project is in collaboration with Dr Manus Biggs at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the successful candidate will spend time in both ‘University College Dublin’ and the ‘National University of Ireland’, Galway.
The Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) is a national, SFI funded, €49.6 million research centre that brings together researchers from NUI Galway, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin, and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The prime objective for CÚRAM is to radically improve health outcomes for patients by developing innovative implantable ‘smart’ medical devices to treat major unmet medical needs. Implants will be designed and manufactured to respond to the body’s environment and to deliver therapeutic agents, such as drugs, exactly where needed. Cutting-edge science will develop devices using the very latest research from biomaterials, stem cells, and drug delivery and the support of strong clinical collaborations, industry partners, and hospital groups to enable rapid translation to the clinic. The centre will include almost 40 industry partners and support product development and the creation of new spin-out companies.
This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for conducting experiments to characterize the properties of the electrode tissue interface of implanted electrodes for neural stimulation and recording, with a particular focus on electrodes for deep brain stimulation.

Role
The candidate is expected to
- take a key role in establishing the recently formed Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LCL). The successful candidate will join senior faculty to build up the Centre to become a world leader in research and education in logistics and supply chain management;
- lead major research activities (seminars, conferences, workshops) and strategic research areas that are of paramount importance for the community of Luxembourg at large (e.g., finance and supply chain management, multi-modal transport and logistics, and supply chain analytics);

The Brains-On-Board project (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/P006094/1) is a multi-university collaboration aiming to create robotic controllers that will enable autonomous robots with the navigational and learning abilities of a honeybee. It involves five research groups at the University of Sheffield, Queen Mary University, London, and the University of Sussex performing research whose goal is biomimetic robot control and which will combine autonomous robotics, computational neuroscience, accelerated neural network simulations on GPU architectures and insect neuroscience and behaviour. In Sussex we are seeking to employ a team of three research fellows for initially 2 years, with possible extension up to 5 years in the first three of those areas.

RF 1 (ref 1388) in bio-inspired robotics, will develop insect-derived models of navigation and apply them to autonomous robots.

The work will include refining and developing models of insect navigation and testing them on robotic platforms ranging from the Sussex Gantry robot through wheeled robots to autonomous aerial vehicles.

A successful candidate will have a keen interest in the interface of computational biology and bio-inspired robotics and a proven track record in working in this area.

All RFs will work together on the project within Sussex and in the larger Brains-On-Board team.
